The skull is of bronze material with a large percentage of copper. Shallow, strongly domed with thin walls. The top of the helmet is crowned with an embossed flat knob. Appears to have a chin strap hole near the edge of the helmet. Note: This helmet was previously sold as lot 296, Auction 54 with Hermann Historica in 2008 as part of the titled sale, Antiquities from the Axel Guttmann Collection and other property. According to the catalog description, similar- identical helmets were recovered from the site of a shipwreck along the Israeli Coast in the 1980’s. We have not dated this item, but previous sale in Germany dates it to the 1st half of the 1st millennium B.C. Condition: Well preserved for its age. Black-brown overall patina. Appears to have restorations to the skull and lower edges of the helmet. Not uncommon for items this old. Estimate: $700-$1,000 Start Bid: $350 40003 Victorian Copy of an Early Two-Handed Broadsword. Handsome recreation of an early two-handed broadsword with a 49 1/4-inch blade. Marked on ricasso: MIT / GOTT / WONEM?? / THATEN / THVN and [star] design on reverse. 17 3/4-inch figurative and ornate crossguard with two heavy ornate ring guards with me- dieval scenes. Green velour covered two-handed 12-inch wood grip with stud decoration and grotesque decorated pommel. No scabbard present. Overall length is 67-inches. Condition: Good to very good, showing age wear, pitting and dark patina overall with traces of surface rust focusing on bottom half of blade. Blade with minor chips on edges. Brass guard 40002 17th Century Continental Crossbow. with slightly turned up quillons. Leather-wrapped grip. Faceted brass pommel. With robust steel bow retained by steel wedge and with string of twisted cords, plain wood and steel tiller (old repairs) of rectangular section with turned hardwood butt. Iron Condition: Very good to fine. Blade with a smooth brown-gray patina and scattered and brass mounts. 8-inch serpentine steel string release. Sold together with a wood and patches of fine pitting. Mellow age patina and handling wear to brass. Leather grip fine. steel cocking mechanism and rare 16-inch bolt with carved wood stabilizer and steel point. Having a 21 1/2-inch curved etched blade with makers mark on ricasso. Eagle head Comprising: 1) 32 1/4-inch straight triangular blade. Ricasso marked: ASB. Brass clam- hilt with wire and leather wrapped handle. Forestry and game crossguard motif. Blade shell guard deep-relief decorated with crossed canons and fleur-de-lis shield. Ribbed marked VIVA O IMPERADOR, also etched with crown and leaf pattern. Leather scabbard mother-of-pearl grips. Beautiful grape leaf decorated guard. 2) European cup-hilt rapier. with brass mounts. Overall length is 28 1/4-inches. 37 1/4-inch steel blade of diamond section. Small armorer’s mark on blade. Full cup with D-guard. Iron pommel cap. Walnut grip. Ornately chased and engraved butt decorated with floral figurals, canon and drum. Hardwood ramrod in trumpet configuration. Contained in modern hardwood case with brass fittings and hardware. Condition: Very good to fine. Steel a smooth gray patina with scattered patches of fine pitting. Gold and brass with a rich age patina. Comprising: 1) Approximately .54 caliber, 8-inch octagonal brass barrel marked: LONDON. Breech with early 19th century Birmingham proof marks. Steel tang, hammer and lock all with simple foliate engraving. Lock marked: HICKIN. Engraved back lock screws. Lively grained hard- wood stock with brass furniture. Engraved trigger guard with acorn finial. Hardwood ram rod with pinned horn tip. Brass pipes. 2) Same as above Condition: Very good to fine. Brass with a smooth, bright patina with a few light scratches. Some scattered pits near muzzle. Signs of hav- ing been cleaned. Steel surfaces with a smooth, slightly mottled age patina. Stock very good with old repairs at left side of fore-end and under ram rod. Crack to thimble. Light losses to wood behind hammer. 2) Same as #1 but with no pitting on barrel surface. Stock fine with only a 3-inch hairline crack to right side starting at muzzle. Stains on right side near muzzle. Estimate: $2,000-$3,000 Start Bid: $1,000 40016 Fancy English Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistol by Segallas. Flared brass 7 ½-inch barrel with 1 ¼-inch diameter muzzle. Ribbed and in two-stages with fine floral engraving, panoply of arms and marked both LONDON and SEGALLAS. Top of muzzle has been embel- lished with vine and flower figure. Left side of breech with three proof marks. Upper tang and screw with light engraving. Back lock extensively floral engraved. Fine engraving to screws. Engraved trigger guard includes panoply of arms which matches those found on both sides of floral engraved butt cap. Relief-carved hardwood stock with fine silver wire inlay at wrist and brass-tipped ram rod. Condition: Fine. All brass with smooth, pleasing age patina. Small patch of powder fouling at breech. Steel a smooth, slightly mottled gray finish. Stock fine with only minor hairline cracks near muzzle and front of lock. Likely re-varnished a long time ago. Lock slightly proud to wood at rear of lock. A beautiful example of an early 19th century maritime pistol. Estimate: $2,000-$3,000 Start Bid: $1,000 40017 English Flintlock Holster Pistol by R. Wheeler & Son, London. Circa 1780. 19” overall, 12” .60 caliber smoothbore barrel with patent breech. All metal about mint. 4¼” breech area of the barrel covered with delicate scroll and floral engraving, highlighted with gilt, along with etched panels. “London” in a riband on the top facet. Balance of the barrel to the muzzle covered with deep etching of military motifs as well as floral and scroll work, all on a gilt frosted background. The two sections of the barrel separated by a fluted and engraved band. Roller frizzen, sliding hammer safety, the interior of the pan gilded, indicating the gun is probably unfired, with what appears to be a plati- num touchhole. Lock and reinforced cock covered with floral engraving including the top jaw and jaw screw, “R. Wheeler & Son” in a riband in the center. The rounded tail of the lock is actually made in two tiers. All brass furniture retains 100% of the original gilt and is deeply cast with elaborate representations of armor, cannons and military trophies. The English walnut stock is breathtaking with every square inch covered with silver wire inlay terminating in inlaid sil- ver flowers and leaves. Silver wedge escutcheons also elaborately engraved with scroll motifs. Just one very small chip by the butt cap tang and a couple of tiny dents, otherwise perfect. Ivory tipped wooden ramrod with elaborate ferrule that unscrews to reveal a ball screw. Contained in decorative wooden display case with hinged glass top. The matched pair approximately .58 caliber, 12-inch round barrel with British proofmarks at the breech. Lock marked: TOWER/[crown]/GR. Brass back plate with belt hook. Hardwood stock with brass furniture. Brass-tipped ram rod. Triggerguard with simple acorn finial. Unit markings and broad arrow marks at the wrist. Pommels also with broad arrow markings. Condition: Both very good. Steel now a smooth, slightly mottled brown patina. Stocks fine with numerous scattered dents. One lower tang slightly proud to wood. Actions function. Lock is marked: KETLAND / & CO. with engraved border and hammer screw. Border-engraved German-silver back plate with traces of old monogram, now vacant. Both lock screws engraved, forward screw set in German-silver mount. Engraved silver trigger guard with acorn finial. Front gripstrap with 5 silver hallmarks. Engraved silver butt cap. Blank silver shield thumb escutcheon on grip with fine border engraving. English walnut stock with German silver thimbles and hickory ramrod. 2) Same as above but lacking engraving on hammer screw. Also one back lock screw has lost the engraving. Condition: Very good to fine. Barrel and lock with smooth, gray patina with scattered fine spotting and fine patches of pitting. Signs of having been lightly cleaned. German silver fittings showing light age wear and patina. Guard and butt retaining generous amounts of silver with only traces of light tarnish.
