Sizeanddurationofpresence The sizeanddurationofyourtacticalfootprintis important.The insurgentsfacedbythe RTFwerenotthefanaticalinsurgentssometimes encounteredinthewesternandsouthernprovinces,althoughthatwas thegroupwefacedwhenemployedinGhazni,ZabulandKandahar.The Afghaninsurgentsinthebowlfollowedthe tacticalplaybookprettywell,fadingawayinthepresenceofsuperiorforces andonlygrouping where theysensedaweaknessoranopportunity.Therewerezonesthattheywouldchoosetodefendandsometimesdefendvigorously, particularlyiftheirleadershipwas threatened.However,the RTFseldomdeployedoutsideofTarinKowtinanythingless thana reinforced platoonsizeandusuallyIhadtheentire RTFforwarddeployedwith190ormorepersonnelandtheabilitytoreinforcewithstrengthatany point.ThismeantwewerehardlychallengedbytheTaliban–wewere simplytoobig.Ourplatooncommanders andcompanycommanders alsomadeexcellentuseoftheirassetsandononeofthefewoccasionswhere theTalibanshapedtofight,weemployedtacticalmanoeuvre to occupykeypositionsthatmade theirpositionuntenableandthegroupfadedaway.Insurgents,therefore,droppedbacktoattempts torocketour positionsanduseIEDs.The lengthoftime inlocationwas a secondvitalconsideration.We stayedinourforwardoperatingbaseatBaluchifor 2½months andthenhandedovertothe AfghanArmy.Thepositions inSorkhMargabandChorawereoccupiedfor2–3monthsbeforewe arrivedandare stillmaintained.Allthishasmeantthattherehasbeenacontinualpresence intheseareas andtheeffectsarepalpable,withthe insurgentpresencecurtailedandattacksbecomingnegligible.This,however,ismerelya relearningofthe same lessonfromIraqandVietnam, andearlierinMalaya,wherebases inthe insurgentheartlandwereoccupiedtodenyenemyaccesstothearea.
