Butthecollectionsofourcontemporariesarenolesstreas- urehoardsthanthosediscoveredinarchaeologicalexcavations.Whentheseprivatecollections aremadepublic,theybecomenationaltreasures. Everyonehastheopportunitytoconductre- searchbasedonthesehistorical artefacts. Eachcoincanpotentiallyrevealnewinsightsfor dedicatedresearchers. YeghiaNercessian’sworkisinvaluable.Hehasprovidedcomprehensiveexplanationsand chronologicallycataloguedthecoinsinhiscollection. NoonewouldhaveknownaboutMichelangelo’sPietastatueoftheVirginMaryifthatwas notoneofthepiecesdisplayedinSt.Peter’scathedralintheVatican.Peoplewouldnothave thepleasureofadmiringLeonarddaVinci’sGiacondaifitwashiddenawayinsomeprivate collectioninsteadofbeingonprominentpublicdisplayattheLouvre. Similarily,Nercessian’s collection,whichhasnowbeenmadepublic,hasbecomepartofourcollective,nationaltreas- ure. ReadingNercessian’sbiography,whichiswrittenbyhisson,andlookingthroughhisvast catalogueIcametoadmirehisdedicationincompilingsuchacomprehensiveandimportant collection. Fewcontemporarycollectorssharethis commitmentandevenfewerhavepublished informationabouttheircollections. Forinstance,whilePaulZ.Bedoukian,admirablydonated hiscollectiontomuseums,healsofailedtopublishacatalogueofthecoinsinhispossession. WearenotfamiliarwithmanycontemporarycollectorsofArmeniancoins.Weonlycome toknowofthemfollowingtheirdeathsandthesubsequentauctioningoffoftheircollections. Coinsthatwereonceheldtogetheraresoldofftodifferentcollectorsaroundtheworld. Dedi- catedcollectorsmeanwhilespendtheirlives,oftenmakinggreatsacrifices,gatheringthecoins togetherfromtheirdisparatelocations. Assomekindofholyrelicsthesecoinsarenational treasures.
