Highlights of ALA Council 2005 Midwinter Meeting, continued. as was a Resolution on School Libraries and the No Child Left Behind Act, seeking recognition of School Media Centers as essential to quality education in K-12 schools. A resolution on cell phone use (to require ALA attendees and participants to turn off cell phone ringers during meetings and programs) did not pass. Not 15 minutes later, someone’s phone rang! COUNCIL III: The Committee on Legislation (COL) submitted a Resolution on Privacy and Standardized Driver's Licenses and Personal Identification Cards that passed unanimously. It seeks a system of checks and balances to protect individual liberties and privacy rights through cooperation of the Department of Homeland Security with the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board created by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004.The COL secured a resolution supporting the Stop Before You Click campaign website at unfairterms.org.They will provide examples of unfair non-negotiated licenses and a way for organizations and businesses to endorse and support the 12 Principles. OTHER INFORMATION: Google will be the new search engine for the ALA Web Site. The site has an A to Z listing, a comprehensive site map and improved navigation.The “FAQ” has been updated. A new Continuing Education Clearinghouse was added at ala.org/ceclearinghouse in September 2004. ALA spring election will be by electronic ballot, unless you request a paper ballot. Membership voting increased 28% last year, and they look for higher numbers this year. The deadline to request a paper ballot is March 9". Paper ballots will be mailed March 15-31. E-ballots will be sent between March 15 and March 22. Voting will be from March 15" until April 22"¢; results will be announced May 2™.
