And when we know these things, we finally see people as they really are, and cooperate or cope with them, regardless of their emotions and prejudices, or of our relationship to them. ( This does not mm1m1ze the significance of genuine and thrilling accomplishment in the artistic or athletic areas of life; we continue to recognize and credit excellence in all fields of endeavor.) • As an individual comes to the point in life at which he can discover the quality of another individual without"help" from press agents and the like, then he will undoubtedly be ' aware of persons the caliber and quality of the teacher to whom this book is dedicated. Quality of character, dependability, devotion to know ledge and his profession, mark this gentle man who has a sense of humor to match his exceedingly friendly and boyish grin, in addition to his quiety teaching abilities. Having taught at Reavis High School for twelve years, this gentleman has seen the Reavis world expand, with problems Mr. Fender, here aiding Joe Slezinger with a chemistry problem after school one day last fall, often helps students outside of the classroom. This is typical of Mr. Fender's desire that as many learn as much as possible. THE DEDICATION In today's world, our attention is begged for by the biggest sale, the largest sign, the loudest holler. Being so conditioned, we often fail to recognize quality if it is not advertised greatly or if it is not previously well known. This is an unfortunate situation. Much of what we read originates from the pens of pro fession pitchmen - -ad men --press agents --persons who do nothing for a living except attempt to call attention to their product or star or service or gimmick, using any device within their means. There are few rules for these people, who do not mind insulting or offending so long as they attract attention --if only for a short while. To become truly educated, we must learn many, many facts, styles, formulas, techniques. Certainly one thing we must learn is to cut away the excess wordage surrounding a product, problem, situation, or person, that we intend. or wish, to know more about. If we can but learn to eliminate the excessive, the super fluous in society, allowing more time for the important activities and duties, life can be more enjoyable, and significantly, more valuable. This cutting away is especially practical and necessary at our particular time and in our particular country - - the home of Madison Avenue, and the all-important image. At the time we are able to look and see beyond the outward, the superficial, the apparent, only then will we be able to realize what in this cluttered and complex society in which we dwell must be swept aside --and what must be cherished, valued, protected, preserved, and imitated. When we realize that knowledgeable people do not select 4 presenting themselves not unlike those of a larger world stream ... but very deep," complimenting one of Reavis' it helps supply with ready, alert, equippt>d, educated youth. finest instructors. School life is very much like life anywhere: dances, sporting events, campaigns, elections, the theatre, advertising, expositions, celebrations, traditions, rallies, and, of course, love. There is frequent comedy, occasional tragedy, and an unending variety ofcom binations ofboth. School life changes on the surface even as life 6
