New York T ’ N RANSLATOR S OTE While most of the sources cited by the author are from Spanish edi- tions (either originally or in translation), throughout the translation of this book I have used published English translations whenever they were available. When published English translations were used for quota- tions from works by the authors on whom this study focuses (José María Arguedas and Mario Vargas Llosa), the in-text citations refer fi rst to the Spanish edition and then to the published English translation. All other translations of Spanish-language sources in this book are my own. I have also included a minimal number of brief translator’s notes among the author’s original endnotes. These appear in square brackets. I would like to express my gratitude to Mabel Moraña for the opportunity to work with her on this translation, as well as for her patience, kindness, generos- ity, and friendship. v A CKNOWLEDGMENTS This book emerged from an invitation from Sergio R. Franco, a professor at Temple University, to participate in a session dedicated to the work of José María Arguedas that took place at the 30th International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in San Francisco in May 2012. The return to the work of Arguedas and Vargas Llosa from new theoreti- cal perspectives motivated me to carry out, starting with this meeting, an extensive confrontation with both writers’ work, above all with regard to their cultural and ideological origins. This book would not have been possible without the stimulus and great quantity of materials, informa- tion, and clues which Sergio generously brought to my attention during the process of drafting the manuscript. To him, then, goes all of my gratitude. I also thank Alex Eastman, for his bibliographic assistance and for the careful correction of drafts and page proofs. To Iberoamericana/ Vervuert, and particularly to Simón Bernal, goes my thankful appreciation for their invaluable editorial care. My appreciation to Martha Canfi eld, director of the Centro Studi Jorge Eielson, in Florence, Italy, and to Alessio Minelli (photographer), for allowing me access to the reproduc- tion of the beautiful painting that appears on the cover of the Spanish edition of this book. vii C ONTENTS 1 Introduction 1 2 Opening 7 3 Arguedas and Vargas Llosa, or the Dilemmas of the  Model Intellectual 1 3 4 Archaism as Floating Signifi er 3 9 5 Language as a Battlefi eld (I): The Dilemma of the Sign 69 6 Language as a Battlefi eld (II): The Narcissism of  the Voice 1 03 7 Toward a Poetics of Social Change: Truth, Modernity, and the National Subject in José María Arguedas 1 29 8 Which Truth?
