INTRODUCTION Thepantropical^enusArdisiaSwartzcontainsapproximately400-500 species(ChenCheih&Pipoly1996)withcentersofhighspeciesdiversity inMalesiaandtheChoco FloristicProvincefrom PanamathroughCo- lombiatoEcuador (Pipoly 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996). Withinthe Neotropics,approximately300specieshavebeendescribed,themajority SiDA18(2):389-393. 1998 390 Sum18(2) fromMesoamerica.TherearerelativelyfewSouthAmericantaxa,perhaps notpassing40total.Duringthecourseofananalysisofthevegetationof theRi'oNambiNaturalReserve,locatedinwesternportionofNariiiocor- respondingtotheChocoFloristicProvince,anewspeciesofArdisiawas discovered,whichisdescribedherewith. TreetoH)mX15cmDBH.Bmnchletsterete,4-8mmglabrous.Leaves alternate;bladescoriaceous,oblanceolatetoobovate,{14.1-)19-25.4cm long,(6.8-)7.5-9.4cmwide,apicallyabruptlyacuminate,theacumen5- 8 mm long, basallyacute, decurrenttopetiolebase, midribcanaliculate andprominentlyraisedabove,prominentlyraisedanddenselyblackpunctate- lineatebelow, thesecondaryveins numerous, .39-47pairs, prominulous aboveandbelow,dryingdarkabove, pallidanddenselyperpuncticulose below,thepunctationsintheformofshortlines,themarginslightlyinrolled exceptrevolutebasally;petiolesmarginatetobase,7-10mmlong,glabrous. InflorescenceiQUTiinA,pyramidal,tripinnatelypaniculate,12.8—22.5cmlong, 11.5-33cmwide,peduncle1-2.5cmlong,therachisprominentlyangulate, thesecondarybrancheswithsmallerpanicularunits12-16cmlong,6-10 cmwide, theultimatebranchesracemose, moderatelyrufousglandular- granuloseandprominentlyanddenselyblackpunctate-lineate;floralbracts caducous, unknown; pedicelscylindrical, (1.0—)1.5-2.5(-3.0) mmlong. Flowersunknown,butfruitingcalyx3-3.5mmlong,rufousglandularpapillate anddarkenedatjunctionoflobeandtube,thelobesdeltatetowidelytri- angular,2—2.2mmlong,2.2—2.5mmwide,apexacutetoaminutelyacuminate apex,minutelyrufous-lepidoteandcarinatemediallywithout,prominently punctateandpunctate-lineate,themarginhyaline,somewhateroseandsparsely glandular-ciliolateapically.frw/Vglobose,5-8(-l0)mmlongandwidewhen dried;whenfre—sh,exocarpfleshy,bittertasting. Distribution. KnownonlyfromReservaNaturalRioNambi,Nariho, Colombia,at1,250-1,350melevation.
