Arden Middle School School Accountability Report Card Reported Using Data from the 2014-15 School Year Published During 2015-16 By February 1 of each year, every school in California is required by state law to publish a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school. Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) all local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to prepare a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which describes how they intend to meet annual school-specific goals for all pupils, with specific activities to address state and local priorities. Additionally, data reported in an LCAP is to be consistent with data reported in the SARC. • For more information about SARC requirements, see the California Department of Education (CDE) SARC Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/sa/. • For more information about the LCFF or LCAP, see the CDE LCFF Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/lc/. • For additional information about the school, parents/guardians and community members should contact the school principal or the district office. DataQuest DataQuest is an online data tool located on the CDE DataQuest Web page at http://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/ that contains additional information about this school and comparisons of the school to the district, the county, and the state. Specifically, DataQuest is a dynamic system that provides reports for accountability (e.g., test data, enrollment, high school graduates, dropouts, course enrollments, staffing, and data regarding English learners. Internet Access Internet access is available at public libraries and other locations that are publicly accessible (e.g., the California State Library). Access to the Internet at libraries and public locations is generally provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Other use restrictions may include the hours of operation, the length of time that a workstation may be used (depending on availability), the types of software programs available on a workstation, and the ability to print documents. Quality, Currency, Availability of Textbooks and Instructional Materials (School Year 2015-16) Year and month in which data were collected: September 22, 2015 San Juan Unified held a public hearing on September 22, 2015 and determined that each school within the district had sufficient and good quality textbooks, instructional materials, or science lab equipment pursuant to the settlement of Williams vs. the State of California. All students, including English learners, are given their own individual standards-aligned textbooks or instructional materials, or both, in core subjects for use in the classroom and to take home. Textbooks and supplementary materials are adopted according to a cycle developed by the California Department of Education, making the textbooks used in the school the most current available. Materials approved for use by the State are reviewed by all teachers and a recommendation is made to the School Board by a selection committee composed of teachers and administrators. All recommended materials are available for parent examination at the district office prior to adoption. The table displays information collected in September 2015 about the quality, currency, and availability of the standards-aligned textbooks and other instructional materials used at the school. If you would like more information on the textbooks and instructional materials please visit our website: http://www.sanjuan.edu/Page/23485 2014-15 School Accountability Report Card for Arden Middle School Page 3 of 13 In July 2009, EC Section 60200.7, delayed all instructional materials adoptions and the development of curriculum frameworks and evaluation criteria until the 2015-16 school year. Since then specific legislation has authorized the State Board of Education to conduct adoptions in mathematics (Assembly Bill 1246) and English language arts/English language development (Senate Bill 201). This increase will need to be analyzed in comparison to existing capacity over the next several years. All classrooms have fire and intrusion monitoring and alarm systems, telephones, and internet connections. There is a site custodial staff to keep the buildings clean. The district provides landscape maintenance and support to keep all the school systems functioning. The school is concerned about the condition of the play fields, the traffic flow before and after school, the number of science classrooms, and the adequacy of office and conference space. During the summer of 2011 three old portables were replaced with Division of State Architect approved portables. The work also included associated low voltage/high voltage connections to buildings; miscellaneous asphalt concrete repair; electrical upgrades and additional lockers. Utilizing the Self- Help Program, the site completed the Arden Pathway project by paving a walking trail from the school to the back part of the campus. The Board of Education and the Superintendent's policy is to ensure that all students are provided with a safe and well-maintained learning environment. The board approved resolutions in 1998 and 2002 to adequately fund maintenance activities and preserve the repairs and improvements funded by two facility bond measures. The school buildings, classrooms and grounds are safe, clean and functional. An inspection of the facility was conducted in December 2015 and determined that there were no unsafe conditions that required emergency repairs. District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A computer automated work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs and health and safety repairs are given the highest priority. The Board of Education has adopted cleaning standards and custodial staffing requirements for all schools in the district. This school meets the Board's standards for custodial staffing and cleanliness. The school's custodians are trained in the proper use of cleaning chemicals and Integrated Pest Management techniques. They are managed day to day by the Principal with assistance from the district's maintenance department. The district participates in the State School Deferred Maintenance Program, with funding allocated for major repair or replacement of existing school building components. Typically, this includes roofing, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, interior or exterior painting, and floor systems. Annually the district budgets $2 million dollars for deferred maintenance activities. 2014-15 School Accountability Report Card for Arden Middle School Page 4 of 13 School Facility Good Repair Status (Most Recent Year) School Facility Good Repair Status (Most Recent Year) Year and month in which data were collected: 12/3/2015 Repair Status Repair Needed and System Inspected Good Fair Poor Action Taken or Planned Systems: Gas Leaks, Mechanical/HVAC, X Sewer Interior: Interior Surfaces X Cleanliness: Overall Cleanliness, Pest/ X Vermin Infestation Electrical: Electrical X Restrooms/Fountains: Restrooms, Sinks/ X Fountains Safety: Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials X Structural: Structural Damage, Roofs X External: Playground/School Grounds, X Windows/ Doors/Gates/Fences Overall Facility Rating (Most Recent Year) Year and month in which data were collected: 12/3/2015 Exemplary Good Fair Poor Overall Rating X B. C. Engagement State Priority: Parental Involvement The SARC provides the following information relevant to the Parental Involvement State Priority (Priority 3): • Efforts the school district makes to seek parent input in making decisions for the school district and each schoolsite. Opportunities for Parental Involvement (Most Recent Year) Arden has a very active parent community which supports the school in countless ways. Parents are actively involved in Arden’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which meets monthly in the evening. Arden’s PTA coordinates varied school volunteer efforts, sponsors parent information evenings and raises funds to support school-wide and individual classroom programs and activities. Parents are key planners and help with school events including classroom activities, orientation, Pops ’n Pasta night, field trips, school dances, school beautification days, Red Ribbon Week activities, Greek Olympics, Medieval Banquet, Westward Ho, High School Readiness day , and the end-of-the-year Park Day Party. Volunteers assist regularly in the library/media center, produce the weekly email newsletter, The Arden Bell, perform landscape beautification projects, and participate in our Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program. Arden parent volunteers serve on district and school committees: SPAC, Site Council, GATE Steering Committee, Band Boosters, Site Planning Committee and Arden Safety Committee. Arden effectively promotes two way communication keeping families informed about school issues. The PTA weekly newsletter, the Arden Bell, is e-mailed to keep families well informed. To stay informed about school activities and class expectations, parents are encouraged each day to check their student’s “Binder Reminder”-a student organizer, the Arden web page (www.sanjuan.edu/arden) for teacher web sites, and Q's Parent Portal for grades and attendance. School to home communication also occurs regularly via mid-quarter progress reports, report cards, MAP Test data (fall, winter and spring) frequent School Messenger messages, Q Connect, and individual and team parent/teacher/student conferences. 2014-15 School Accountability Report Card for Arden Middle School Page 9 of 13 Contact Information Parents or community members who wish to participate in leadership teams, school committees, school activities, or become a volunteer may contact the school at 971-7306 or [email protected]. In partnership with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and the City of Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD), each school becomes part of a safety zone that is patrolled daily by a sheriff’s deputy or CHPD officer. The Deputy Sheriffs are assigned to a specific schools which are identified by geographic zones. The Deputy Sheriffs may move from one the geographic zone to another as safety needs dictate. The CHPD Police Officers work identified schools within the City of Citrus Heights and respond as safety needs dictate. In addition to daily support from a designated Sheriff’s deputy or CHPD officer, this school is a part of the San Juan Unified School District’s Safe Schools Task Force, which is comprised of safety teams from each of the school sites. Each school safety team meets regularly to discuss safety issues, update their site emergency plans, and to take steps to be proactive in preventing various types of school-related safety issues. Law enforcement provides speakers to address students, staff and community groups. Our safety team receives regular training through the Safe Schools Task Force. Each school site is responsible for updating their Comprehensive School Safety Plan by March 1st of every year. The plan must be approved by the School Site Council before being submitted to the district Safe Schools Manager. Every San Juan classroom has a standardized “Safety Folder” which serves as a guide for teachers, includes the site specific crisis response procedures and a district standardized emergency flip chart. This school meets or exceeds the Education Code requirements for fire drills and lock down drills. D.
