INTRODUCTION.

Ml*. William Jones was a merchant who re-
sided in the suburbs of Waterford, a city in the
province of Munster and south of Ireland. He
had been a long time in business, and, through '
the goodness of Providence, was net only able
to live in comfort and respectability, but to edu-
cate his two sons for the duties of the sphere in
which they were intended to move.
William and Patrick Jones, respectively four-
teen and thirteen years of age, were boys of
amiable dispositions and good parts; they loved
