Nothing in this world would describe the goodness and grace you have bestowed in my life. Truly, as said in Lamentations 3:22 & 23, “It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” All glory and praise belongs to You. Daddy and Mommy, thank you for the sacrifices you had done for our family. Thank you for your love, and thank you for training me not only to be a good person, but also to be a Godly one. You both are my heroes. Ate Katz, Ate Kristine, Ate Karissa, thank you for the fights we had and the memories we shared—both happy and sad. Along with mom and dad, you are the best supporters I ever had. Mikaela Kris, thank you for coming into our family and bringing us joy. To my friends, I am not going to mention your names here, but you know who you are. If you think we are friends, then this 1 applies to you (haha). Thank you for the good times as well as the bad times. Marinay family, you are like my second family in Los Baños. Thank you for letting me stay in your house whenever I needed to. I really appreciate the kindness you had shown me. Lastly, to Professor Leonora Fajutagana, thank you being a good adviser to me. Though we have known each other only for a short time, you are there to guide me in my academic life. 2 Profile CODENAME: Arctic Bear NAME: Kim Benjamin E. Licerio LOCATION: San Pedro, Laguna AGE: 20 PLACE OF BIRTH: Calamba, Laguna SEX: Male HEIGHT: 5’9’’ WEIGHT: 156 pounds BUILD: Slender HAIR: Black Eyes: Brown COMPLEXION: Light Brown RACE: Asian NATIONALITY: Filipino BACKGROUND INFO: A tech specialist. That is how his family and friends view him. For them, he is the one to go to whenever they have problems with their laptops, cellphones, and everything related to technology. He likes to read articles about smartphones and computers. A lot of people ask him why he took up BA Communication Arts as a degree in college instead of BS Computer Science or BS Information Technology. His answer is that it is good to learn new things and expand the horizon of his knowledge. A son, a brother, and an uncle. These are some of the roles he plays. He grew up in a family of modest means, and he is 3 blessed with a loving father, mother, and siblings. All of his siblings are female that is why while growing up, he was sometimes viewed by other people as effeminate. This view was highlighted more especially when his father went abroad for work. However, instead of taking it seriously, he made fun of it. He laughs every time he thinks that even their dogs at home are all females. His sister’s child is also a female. All his life, he is surrounded more by females, but that is not an issue for him. He decides that he will be the man of the house especially when his father is away. A friend. He values friendship so much. He cannot imagine what his life will be without friends. He is fascinated with the kind of friendship polar bears develop with other bears. That was the reason why he chose his codename, Arctic Bear. His name is Kim Benjamin E. Licerio. In the noon of the first day of July 1995, a boy was born in Calamba, Laguna. He is the youngest child of Rolando D. Licerio and Rodora E. Licerio. He grew up in a Christian family. When he was young, he was brought to the church every Sunday wherein he was taught of Biblical lessons and principles. He was also enrolled in a Christian school, and there he was taught not only of academic things but also of spiritual things. Everywhere he went the Bible was being taught—at home, at school, and at 4 church. Those institutions made him a good person, and he thought that being good was enough. Until one day, he realized that it was not. On May 6, 2004, a third-grader was sitting in a clothes bin when suddenly he thought of something. What will happen to him after he dies? Where will he go? Those questions bothered him terribly. The boy knew that the Commander of one’s life should be the Lord Jesus Christ as it was taught at the church, at school, and at home. Also, he was aware that his parents and siblings already allowed Jesus Christ to be the Commander of their lives. With this in his mind, he asked his eldest sister to explain to him God’s simple plan of salvation. That moment, he surrendered his own will and let Jesus Christ be the Commander of his life; he was enlisted in the service and he became a soldier of Jesus Christ. After that day, he became active in the service for his Commander. In his high school days, he took part in certain church ministries. Every Thursday, together with other church members, he went out and shared to other people the same message he received that day when he got enlisted in the army of his Commander. He became a part of the church rondalla wherein he played octavina during Sundays. This had been almost his life in his high school years. Then, the day he would be leaving high 5 school came. He graduated as the valedictorian which made him and his family happy. However, this happiness was replaced by fear as he was about to enter a new battlefield—college. This field had always been challenging for him. He had a hard time adapting in the beginning as he was put in an unfamiliar territory with different faces and a new culture. Knowing that his Commander would not leave him alone in this battlefield, he had been fighting with all his might until the day he would be able to report back to his Commander and say, “Mission accomplished, Sir.” 6 First Thoughts College. I had been in this mission for almost four years, and until now, I am still alive and kicking. I had gone through troubles and hardships and had faced opponents, but I survived and conquered them all. I still remember clearly the first time I had been in this combat zone. I was like a ship sailing in uncharted waters. I did not know if I was going to pass my subjects or if I was going to have friends. But, I had no choice as this was the assignment my Commander had given me. I had to adapt and continue battling. So I did. As time went on, I was able to accomplish things comfortably. I passed all my subjects, and I got good grades. Until this moment I have not failed one. Also, I now have friends I can trust. They are not many, but I know I can count on them whenever I have problems. They are my comrades, and we always got each other’s back. Countless enemies I had fought, or so I thought; I realized that this battleground I am in is more like a training ground wherein I can hone my skills and learn new things. This place had brought me challenges and hardships I could not even imagine back then. 7
