Environmental and sustainability issues have continued to develop in importance both in our own practice and in the design and construction fi eld overall. We believe this edition stays true to the spirit of Charlotte Baden-Powell’s original in scale, purpose and orientation; we have updated and slimmed some of the technical information on lighting and other services, and revised sections on struc- tures, building elements and materials. Elsevier carried out some research with readers and we are grateful to them for their candid and helpful responses. Chapter 2 has been renamed ‘Planning, Policy and Guidance’, better refl ecting its broad scope. Every chapter has been revised and we have continued to learn throughout the process. We have been ably assisted by new contributors, acknowledged elsewhere. We welcome readers’ comments and suggestions on this edi- tion and on the electronic format. Jonathan Hetreed and Ann Ross
