Introduction The Fourth Conference on Fish Telemetry in Europe was held in Trondheim, Norway from 26 to 30 June 2001. The aim of the Conference was to facilitate exchanges of knowledge and ideas between aquatic scientists, managers and engineers who are actively involved in the development and application of telemetry techniques to studies in marine and freshwater ecosystems. The Conference built on the success of the three previous Conferences on Fish Telemetry in Europe, held in Liege, Belgium (1995), La Rochelle, France (1997) and Norwich, United Kingdom (1999). The Conference attracted 118 delegates from 19 countries, and there were 81 oral and poster contributions presented. The Conference has become global in nature, with par ticipants from five different continents. After review by referees, 33 manuscripts were selected for inclusion within these proceedings. Fish telemetry has developed into a diverse field. Techniques now range from the simple conventional approach of locating individuals to highly sophisticated techniques that measure physiological parameters, such as muscle activity (EMG) and heart rate. Furthermore, environ mental parameters, such as temperature, light, conductivity and pressure, can be measured and combined with physiological sensors. Increasingly advanced data-logging techniques have also been developed that allow for the geolocation and long-term tracking of animals. Consequently, telemetry is being applied in a range of projects, varying from basic research in laboratories to management studies of, for example, fish migration and exploitation. The Conference demon strated that fish telemetry continues to expand in popularity and use, with the development of new research areas and methodologies, and into fruitful combinations with other techniques. We would like to thank the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, for hosting the Conference. We also wish to thank all the attendees for participating in the Conference, all those who assisted in the conference arrangements - especially members of the secretariat, scientific and organizing committees - and all the referees for helping to select and improve the manuscripts for the proceedings. Special thanks to Dr Henri J. Dumont, Editor-in Chief of Hydrobiologia, and Kluwer Academic Publishers for their interest in the production of this special issue. EVA B. THORSTAD1 IAN A.
