Coates, TreJor B. Reynoldson & Thomas B. Reynoldson (eds), Aquatic Oligochaete Biology VI. Preface This volume reflects the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaetes. The sympo sium was hosted by Dr Christer Erseus (Swedish Museum of Natural History) during September 5-10, 1994 at the Tjam6 Marine Biological Laboratory, near Str6mstad, Sweden. The meeting was open to anyone interested in the morphology, systematics, evolution, biogeography, ecology, pollution biology or physiology of the Oligochaeta of surface or marine waters, and it was attended by over 60 scientists from 21 different countries. Tjam6 is an island in the middle of an extensive archipelago near the Norwegian border, on the Swedish west coast. With its splendid location and facilities, the Tjamo Laboratory proved to be an excellent venue for scientific exchange and social interaction, although some participants could not resist the temptation of sneaking out from time to time to collect mushrooms, which were abundant in the surroundings. The program also included proper excursions, both on the sea with bird and seal watching, and by coach through the northern part of the province BohusUin. The bus tour was sponsored by the town of Stromstad, which also generously hosted a dinner with locally flavored entertainment. We are all very much undebted to Dr Lars Afzelius (Director) and Mr Lars Hagstrom, both at the Tjamo Laboratory, for all their efforts and assistance during the symposium, and to Mr Torsten Torstensson (chairman of the Stromstad town council) for all his support. Financial aid to the organization of the symposium was provided by the International Science Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Center Foundation, the Swedish Natural Science Research Council and the Swedish Museum of Natural History. In addition, Armeniska Kulturforeningeni SOderUilje and numerous individuals among the participants provided contributions towards the travel expenses of several colleagues from East European countries. During the week at Tjamo, Mr S. Lundberg, Mrs K. Rigneus, Mr L. Sandberg, Mrs E. Sigvaldadottir and Ms K. Sindermark (all at the Swedish Museum of Natural History) assisted in all kinds of practical matters. Their help and friendly attitude were very much appreciated by everybody. All papers in this volume have been rigorously peer reviewed. All reviewers are thanked for their constructive comments and criticisms.
