First is Kay Cahill who will be taking over the office duties as Office Administrator / Membership. In her new position, Kay will be respon- sible for assisting in all membership related functions including pro- cessing membership information, overseeing member communications, giving tours as well as keeping the office organized. Kay has a long background with private clubs primarily in the Midwest as her family has belonged to several golf clubs and city clubs over the years. She has come to know what member expectations are at private clubs and is very adept at anticipating member needs in advance. Kay brings to us an in depth background in communications, editing, graphic design and database management. Kay also served as a substitute teacher grades 6 - 12 so she has a familiarity with kids programs and working with con- cerned parents in a variety of situations. A graduate of UNI, Kay looks forward to establishing a long-term relationship with EYC and hopes to bring some much needed stability to our office staff. Kevin Pikkel has also joined the staff as our newest smiling face be- hind the bar working side by side with Dayna Medieros and Will French. Kevin is currently a student at Cal Berkeley where he has high aspirations in the field of political science and economics. Kev- in honed his hospitality skills with the Four Season Hotel in Westlake Village, CA, a resort hotel that boasts one of the highest rated resort spas in Southern California. There Kevin worked as a poolside bar- tender and pool attendant. In his spare time Kevin enjoys and listens to all varieties of books on tape; he is a runner and enjoys, playing soccer. Before injuring his ACL in a soccer related incident, Kevin was an international soccer player touring all through Austria, Ger- many and London with the Olympic Development Program. Dennis Please give Kay and Kevin a warm welcome to EYC! I look forward to seeing you around the Club! ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 4 From the Commodore, SUSAN JACQUELIN We had our first Small Boat race on March 8, ably run by Small Boat Fleet Captain Chris Golian and Rear Commodore Jim Vickers. Our Small Boat races are dinghy race days we run throughout the summer. They are very casual: they start about 12noon, fleet starts are determined by who shows up, and the entry fee is $10.00 (cash). The course is from about Coast Guard Island to about Jack London; we try to get off about 5 races a day, so they are short courses. It is not a series, so individuals or fleets may come for only one or two races throughout the season. Boats include Mercury’s, Millimeters, Finns, Lasers, Vanguards, and any other dinghy that shows up. There are competitors from around the Bay; some are real pros and some are brand new racers and the pros help the newbies learn about their boats and about racing. The competitors range from Juniors to Grandpas and Grandmas; if you have a dinghy, come on out and play! March 8 was also the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) Spring Leadership Conference at Val- lejo Yacht Club. Members representing EYC included PICYA Staff Commodore Fred Rutledge, PI- CYA Past Commodore Verne Bendsen, RBOC Past President Linda Bendsen, Port Captain Nicki Powell-Ford and yours truly. Conference presenters included Captain Greg Stump, USCG Captain of the Port of San Francisco who spoke about the logistical challenges and solutions of maintaining safety and security during the 34th America’s Cup; and Tom Lehman, Golden Gate Yacht Club Vice Commodore, who spoke about the 35th America’s Cup (hint: he mentioned Alameda as a team base 3 times during his talk!). Other topics included the legislative activities of the Recreational Boaters of California, member retention strategies, liquor and tax laws applicable to non-profits, and several other very interesting sub- jects. It is always great to talk to members of other clubs about common problems and solutions. A good event put on by PICYA. Our March STEM (Second Thursday of Every Month) presenter was member Dan Lennon who demon- strated some intriguing marine applications for our various smart phones and tablets. Our final Jack Frost race in the Bay was the 15th, and although Vice Commodore Jim Vickers’ ace Race Committee again faced some pretty stiff challenges, they managed to pull off flawless races. Thank you Race Committee! EYC members who finished in the top 3 of their Divisions include Jens Jensen, Daniel Alvarez, Grant Hayes, Bill West and Mike Kennedy. Congratulations, Racers! Coming up on Friday, April 4, is our first Spring Twilight Series. Come down and watch the racers of our “beer can series” as they finish right in front of the Club. Join the competitors in the bar for some liba- tions and in the lounge for some sea stories. And remember, you can always join the Race Committee in the Whalers on the Estuary, or on the dock to record the finishes. Don’t miss the Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show at Jack London Square April 10-13. We always have a great membership booth at the show and gather quite a few new members. Please volunteer a couple of hours of your time to be at the booth and chat with the public about how wonderful our Club is! (And re- ceive a free ticket to the show!) (See the “VOLUNTEERS NEEDED” Ad on the following page!) SSSSUUUUSSSSAAAANNNN See you on the water! ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 5 Port of Encinal Report By Nicki Powell-Ford, EYC Port Captain With the wonderful spring weather you will see the ever welcomed and industrious dock crews out there re- pairing dock substructure, pounding nails, and generally making our docks a better place to visit. Please be sure to smile and wave when you see Chuck Wetteroth and his crew out there working hard. Be patient if you come in to visit and find them and there tools spread out across the docks or a few boards pulled up to al- low for repairs. No matter how annoying stepping over things may be, remember they are volunteers out there on their days off dedicating time, sweat, and energy to maintaining our club. Also be sure to thank our maintenance guy Jerry the next time you pull up to the dock and use a hose to rinse your boat or fill up your water tanks, he has been running around repairing water pipes under the docks damaged by the winters rock- ing and rolling. *If you ever hear the sound of running water please alert Chuck, Jerry, or myself so that we can quickly make repairs before filling the estuary with more fresh water. After the hectic dockside month of March, April will slow down just a little with Pt. San Pablo Yacht Club on April 11-13 and the Islander 36 Association on April 18-20th. I invite everyone to come on in for open- ing day weekend, tie up and decorate your boats to participate in the Opening Day Parade out on the bay Sunday April 27th. It would be great to see a bunch of EYC boats out there. Registration and theme infor- mation available on the PICYA’s new website: http://picya.org/ Even with all these cruise ins, members are always welcome to make use of the member dock (dock A) and I encourage everyone to come down, visit your club, eat, drink and be merry. The only time we ever close the members dock is for such events as Master Mariners, Wheel Chair Regatta, and Second Half Opener. It is open on a first come basis, just remember to follow these simple rules: let your Port Captain know you’re coming, check in with the office, fly your burgee, and on busy weekends be prepared to raft up if necessary. We just want to make sure we avoid the situation where a scheduled club full of boats arrives after sailing Nicki clear across the bay only to find “there is no room at the inn”. Director ANDREW NELSON Registrations are coming in daily for our summer program. We had a good turn- out for our Open House, with lots of new faces and plenty of returners coming by for a boat ride and a bite off the grill. Big thanks to all the parents and kids who spent their Sunday sharing the joy of sail- ing with others. If you weren't able to make the Open House, or have friends that are interested in sailing this summer, be sure to check out our web- site for more info. You can also register for Adult Sailing while you're there! In high school sailing news, we just concluded our regular season. As it stands most of our teams have moved up from where they were at this time last year. NorCal as a whole is well represented, with 3 teams in the top ten and 8 in the top 20, including Athenian (20) and Miramonte (10). Alameda and Oakland Tech are ranked 26th and 28th respective- ly. A high tide floats all boats and we're seeing real improvement as a NorCal league and among the teams that sail out of EYC. Maybe the end of SoCal dominance is near? I sure hope so! EYC was also very well represented at the Spring Guy Raber & Michael Lively of Miramonte HS Dinghy Regatta at St. Francis. Members, juniors, parents, and coaches all took to the water, with a total of 11 boats representing EYC. All fleets were postponed on Saturday until 2:30pm when we final- ly got enough breeze to fight the vigorous flood tide. On Sunday the fleet was skunked for wind and rac- ing was cancelled for the day. Top overall finishers included Lindsay Grove and Jean Rutledge (2nd- Vanguard 15), Jonathan Schimmel (3rd- Vanguard 15), Drake Hayes and Aitor Iriso (2nd- Club 420), Andrew Nelson (1st- Finn), and Max Rohr (4th- Finn). Despite the lack of wind everyone had a great time waiting around together.
