Preview Approaching Plays

Description:
This booklet is one of a set of three: Approaching Poetry, Approaching Plays and Approaching Prose Fiction. They are designed to help you develop the analytical skills you will need for studying literary texts at university level. Although they can be studied and referred to at any time, you will find Approaching Prose Fiction particularly helpful for your study of The Realist Novel, and Approaching Poetry particularly helpful for your study of Romantic Writings. Approaching Plays will help you with Shakespeare and the Canon.

We estimate that each booklet, including all the exercises, would take about 15 hours to work through, the equivalent of roughly a week’s study. However, we don’t recommend that you use a whole week in this way. We suggest instead that you turn to each booklet when it is relevant to the block you are working on, and then refer back to or re-read sections when appropriate. Each booklet includes a glossary explaining technical terms that you will need to become familiar with. (Terms appear in bold type at their first usage in the text.)

Each booklet includes advice on writing TMAs as well as examples of essays, so obviously the moment when you have to start writing your own TMA is the moment to consult that part of the booklet. Approaching Poetry, Approaching Plays and Approaching Prose Fiction are resources that have been written to support your work on the course, to help you get the most out of it and to increase your enjoyment in studying literature. Our hope is that you will come to regard them as practical handbooks that you turn to throughout the entire year whenever you want to practise skills of analysis, or need clarification on particular points.
