As a nation, we responded with grief, outrage, generosity, and patriotism. In the following days and weeks, as the events of that day became chillingly clear, innumerable stories of triumph and heartbreak emerged from the wreck age. Watching these events unfold, we were taught what it means to be an American like no civics book could teach us; we were taught that our freedom is not a right but a privelege, and we were shown in unmistakable terms that life is a gift that is precious and fleeting. The events of that day will shape the way our generation sees the world, our country, and the future. Unlike graduates before us, we will enter this new stage in life forever changed. We dedicate our book to those who lost their lives, their loved ones, their innocence ... on Spetember 11, 2001.
