We all share an interest in the literature of the second century, and think it a not unworthy memorial of the time when 'the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilized portion of mankind'. We have followed Gibbon also in allowing into our purview the whole of the 'happy period of more than fourscore years' which he would call the Age of the Antonines. \Ve have thus said something of Plutarch and Dio, who are important witnesses to the outlook of the whole century, and in particular to its view of the relationship between present and past. We have written on what we indi vidually chose, and from various (and not always compatible) points of view. So this is far from a history of Antonine litera ture; but we hope that our contributions will be of some service to future historians of the period, which badly needs a compre hensive view, embracing both Greek and Latin. I should like to express my thanks to Richard Hawley for undertaking the work of the Index, and to all those concerned at the University Press for their help at every stage. D.A.R.
