RREUSE works at EU level to set the conditions to create “local” job opportunities for people suffering from exclusion • 77 000 Jobs • 65.000 volunteers and trainees • 950.000 tons of material diverted from landfilling every year of which: o 348.000 tons prepared for re-use o 556.000 tons recycled • A consolidated turnover of over 1.5 billion EUR REUSE AND JOB CREATION • Multimaterial re-use centre: 70/80 jobs per 1.000 Tonnes collected of which 50% PfR. Potentially 200.000 jobs could be created if 1% household waste was PfR • WEEE re-use centre: 63 jobs created for 1.000 Tonnes WEEE collected for reuse. Potentially 55.000 jobs could be created if 25% of WEEE was PfR. • Textile re-use centre: 20 jobs/1.000 Tonnes Potentially 120.000 jobs could be created if 6 Mtonnes textile waste generated was to be PfR The case of Flanders In Flanders a “Circular Economy” approach started as early as 1993. With the strong support of the Regional Government and the active participation of local authorities, the Waste Agency (OVAM) and Social Economy, the Circular Economy (re-use sector) is a reality of: • 120 re-use centers managed by 31 Social Enterprises with specific geographical coverage (to avoid useless competition) • 65,000 Tons of material collected every year • 5,140 jobs 75% of which for workers from disadvantaged groups • 110 Millions EUR combined turnover 50% generated through sales • 5 Millions paying customers • Region has separate prevention target: 7kg/cap/yr 1 0 Managing WEEE Network of 50 social enterprises in France working in re-use and recycling of WEEE - 150,000 tonnes WEEE collected (1/4th generated in France) - 102,000 appliances refurbished / year (2016) - 2500 people employed (>80% distanced from labour market) / 64% of those on insertion contracts leave ENVIE with either a new job or further training - Diverse public and private partnerships (including EPR schemes such as EcoSystemes) Beyond refurbishment and re-use, Envie are now also: - Providing electrical repair services to citizens - Selling spare parts recovered from used machines - Repairing and refurbishing medical equipment
