Another Cosmopolitanism SEYLA BENHABIB OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS Another Cosmopolitanism The Berkeley Tanner Lectures The Tanner Lectures on Human Values, which honor the American schol- ar, industrialist, and philanthropist Obert Clark Tanner, are presented annually at each of nine universities in the United States and England. They were established at the University of California,Berkeley, beginning in the 2000/1academic year. This volume is the third in a series of books based on the Berkeley Tanner Lectures. In this volume we include the lectures that Seyla Benhabib presented in March,2004,along with the responses of the three invited commentators on that occasion—Bonnie Honig,Will Kymlicka, and Jeremy Waldron—and a final rejoinder by Professor Benhabib. The volume is edited by Robert Post, who also con- tributes an introduction. We have established the Berkeley Tanner lec- tures Series in the belief that these distinguished lectures, together with the lively debates stimulated by their presentation in Berkeley, deserve to be made available to a wider audience.Additional volumes are now in preparation. I am grateful to Bonnie Honig,William Kymlicka, and Jeremey Waldron, whose deep and engaging comments have taught me a great deal. Robert Post has been an invaluable friend, critic, and interlocutor as this volume has taken shape and at many points has helped me sharpen my arguments. Several other colleagues have commented on various aspects of these discussions:Tom McCarthy,Nancy Fraser,Rainer Bauboeck, and Jim Sleeper, my husband, have made important observations along the way. Turkuler Isiksel has joined this project in its final phases and has provided invaluable editorial and bibliographic assistance. I thank her for the good work.
