BristolAnnualReportfor1996 DEDICATION HERBERT GEORGE RQBIE Herbert Robie was born at hisfamily's home on Willow St. in Bristol October 14, 1913. He has a twin sister Harriet Morrison. He passed away February 12, 1995 at his home on Robie Road, leaving behind a legacy oftraining oxen and love forhisfamily. I am told that when he was ten years old he brought his steers to the winter carnivalfrom the farm on PeakedHill andwent home with a bag of grain. Formanyyears he walkedhis oxen, hitched to the old hay wagon in the Fourth ofJuly and OldHomeDayparades. After the hurricane of1938 he spent a lot of time cleaning upfallen trees around cottages at the lake with hisoxen. Herbert attendedfairs throughout New England competing in pulling matches and show- ing his trickoxen. He usually broughthome a blue ribbon ortwo. As thefamily grew he had to give up hisfavorite past time; being a dairy farmerwas afull timejob. Neverthe less he was neverwithoutapairofoxen to gatherwood, sapandlogs. As a young boy he meta man who trainedoxen to do tricks anddecidedhe could do it too, which he did. He had manypair over the years that could bal- ance on the seesaw, stand and turn on the box, and lay down on command. In July 1991 Sara Percell visited thefarm with the camera crew of"REAL PEO- PLE", andfilmedhim in action with hissteers. This wasairedonNBC. He always said the greatest time he ever had with the oxen was when he moved the new coveredbridge across the riverin Ashland. Anothertime he had hispicture taken with SenatorDole andElizabeth DoleattheBelknap4-HFair. Herbert is survived by his wife Marion of59 years, andfour daughters Sylvia Carrigan, Hilda Bruno, Lucille Keegan, Joanne Robie Williams, twelve grandchildren andsixgreatgrandchildren.
