Annual Reports Town of the of Bradford New Hampshire For the Year Ending December 1998 31, Front Cover On East Washington Road is the foundation ofthe lovely old Bradford Springs Hotel. Built in 1840 and enlarged to seventy five rooms, hundreds ofvisitors came to take the cure ofthe mineral waters. All summer, from both Hillsborough and from Bradford, the stage coaches made the train connections with their loads ofvisitors and luggage. The shallow Lake Lovewell covered over seven acres forthe rowing ' pleasure ofthe visitors There were lawn games, a bowling alley ' , shooting gallery, livery stable and "other amusements". The sixty acres included adairy farm. Meals could be sent to rooms for 25certts added to the room charge offrom $6.00 to $12.00 weekly. The Hotel closed in 1916 and the buildings torn down. Today, the cellar hole is cleaned out, and on site are a bulletin board, a picnic table and a plaque thanking the Keating Family for theirdonation to the Town ofBradford forthis historic site. Brown (1916-1998) Stanley was born in Derry, New Hampshire in 1916 and grew up in Bradford. He received his BachelorofArts degree from Dartmouth College in 1939 and his Juris Doctorate from Cornell University in 1942. He was admitted to practice in New Hampshire in 1942 and in New York in 1945. Following a stint as a Naval Aviatorduring World WarII, Stanley entered private practice. He was a founding memberofthe firm, Abramson, Reis, Brown and Dugan. Stanley served as President ofthe New Hampshire Bar Association in 1969-70 and held many high ranking positions in the American Bar Association. Aside from his legal work, he was active in business and politics. He was a developer who built and managed the Loch Lyndon Country Club in Bradford, served as a Boy Scout leader and Little League coach. Throughout his life, he was active in the Republican Party, a state senator from 1951 to 1953, a delegate to the 1952 Republican National Convention, Bradford planning board memberforten years and selectman in the 1980's. He is survived by his wife of56 years, ThaliaMay Ryder Brown, his son Kenneth C. Used by the area Indians in the 1700's, the "restorative" waters ofmagnesia, lime, potassium, sulphur and other minerals were popularboth for bathing and drinking until the early part ofthis century.
