One of those special people is our own bear man, Ben Kilham with his love for animals. Through his love for animals, particularly bears, he brought our whole community Yoda. Yoda was raised from infancy by the caring and loving hands of Ben. Yoda lived to bear (pun intended) and raise her cubs in the woods of Lyme. In the fall of 2003, during bear hunting season, Yoda was killed. Trusting ofman and wearing a large, bright orange and yellow-colored tracking device around her neck, she was an easy target for human short- sightedness and indifference. We are grateful to Yoda. She helped Ben to learn and understand some of the behaviors of our quiet and elusive neighbors, the black bears. Ben, in turn, shared what he learned with all of us. Yoda's death represents a loss to us in our quest to understand the life and spirit of the bear. Her death is a loss to us also as a fellow mammal and a spiritual totem ofour ancestors. MEMORIAM IN We are better for having known, shared and Hved with these extraordinary people. John Harlow (1918 - 2003) During his time in Lyme, Mr. Harlow served as a selectman from 1976-1982. He serv^ed as Lyme's first interim Administrative Assistant from 1982 to spring of 1983. He was active with both the Recreation Commission and the Youth Committee and served as the court appointed Probation Officer in 1977. Everett "Shine" King (1923 - 2003) Mr. King and his wife, Priscilla, moved to Lyme in 1959 and built and operated a daiiy farm. He served on the Board of Selectmen from 1962 to 1968, the Planning Board from 1973 to 1978 and the Budget Committee from 1982 to 1985. MEMORIAM IN Vivian G. Piper (1918 - 2003) Mrs. Piper was bom in Lyme, delivered by Dr. Weymouth, and lived in Lyme her entire life. Her books and memories of life in rural Lyme have touched many people over the years. She was the "school bus driver". She provided transportation for rural students to the Lyme Schools for nearly 20 years, with a horse and wagon or with an old truck, whenever the road conditions would allow. Fred O. Stearns Jr. (1929 - 2003) Mr. Steams lived most of his life as a resident of Lyme. After his retirement from TmmbuU-Nelson Constmction Company in Hanover after 44 years, he worked for the Town of Lyme as a part time road crew member from 1994 to 2003 where he worked with two ofhis sons, Fred O. Steams, III, Road Agent, and Russell Steams.
