ADJ. 679-5441 TRIBUTE TO LIONEL FECTEAU Lionel was born in Epping to Tom and Yvonne Fecteau in 1926 and was married to Mary Silveria for forty years. A busy man, he was always working at something. At twenty-three, he was the youngest N.H. State Representative serving from 1953 to 1955. He was an active member of Richard A. Mitchell Post #51, Sampson World War II Veterans and Knights of Columbus in Exeter. Starting at the age of ten, he worked in his father's store; Fecteau s market, for seventeen years. He continued his contacts ' with people in his capacity as a rural carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Epping for twenty-five years, retiring in 1989. He was always an active and diligent participant at Annual Town Meetings. He had the courage of his convictions and had the unique ability to display this without rancor or incurring animos- ity. He will be missed at these Meetings. It vv-as not an unfamiliar sight to see Lionel and his family sweeping the downtown streets and sidewalks. His friends, family and co-workers could always count on Lionel's mischievous humor to lighten the air with his funny stories and amusing impressions. A source of comfort to his wife, Mary, was the thoughtful reflection made by a friend that "not only was Lionel a gentle man, he was also a gentleman". We concur with that appropriate and fitting tribute to this man of Epping. The Town of Epping was originally part of Exeter. We had ex- tensive trade with the West Indies and exchanged timber for native products. In 1741, the population decided to become incorporated to become incorporated as a separate parish. January 14, 1741, a petition was presented by the fifty-six inhabitants of this north- westerly part of Exeter to the General Court. The House of Repre- sentatives approved the petition. The petitioners and delegates from Exeter appeared before the General Court on February 2, 1741. The petition was granted and the boundaries set. The monument boundary markers can be seen surrounding our town. This action was sanctioned by Provincial Governor; Benning Wentworth on February 3, 1741. As the first Governor of New Hampshire, Governor Wentworth had the privilege of naming towns.He frequently named them after the towns he loved back in England. We have two versions of the name of "Epping". One - many of the early settlers of Epping came from Epping England and convinced the governor to name our town. Two - the Governor had special fond memories of Epping, England and named our town. By 1773, there were 1,648 residents in Epping making it the fourth largest town in the County. Exeter - 1,741, Londonderry - 2,399 and Portsmouth - 4,466. By 1930, Epping was the sixth largest town in the County with 1,672. Newmarket - 2,511, Salem -2,751, Exeter - 4,872, Derry - 5,131 and Portsmouth - 14,495. Epping sent 150 men to join the Union forces in the Civil War. Only returned. In 1892, Epping opened it's first free public library in one room of the Town Hall where the Selectmen's Office is today. When the Town was incorporated in 1741, the parish and town were the same and all legal business of religion was transacted in Town Meetings. One of the votes passed at the first Town Meeting, was to choose a committee to agree on a new minister. The following, though an incomplete list, are some of the residents of Epping who held prominent positions in the State: Governor of the State - William Plumer, from 1812 to 1813 and from 1816 to 1819; David L. Morrill, from 1824 to 1827; Benjamin F. Prescott, from 1877 to 1879. United States Senators - William Plumer, from 1802 to 1807, David Morrill, from 1817 to 1823; John Chandler, from, 1820 to 1829. Wales, Epping, Victoria, Epping Forest, Queensland, Epping Forest, Tasmania. FRANCE - Epping, Moselle Epping, England, the oldest of these towns, existed in early Saxon times. The Town is situated 16 miles northeast of London and serves as the headquarters of a Parliamentary Division known as the "West Essex" or "Epping" Division, which sends one member to the British House of Commons.
