Town Meeting Dates Tuesday, March 2004 9, am pm 8:00 - 7:00 Whitney Hall Auditorium 23 Main Street, Enfield Voting only by Official Ballot for the election of Town Officers and all other articles requiring vote by Official Ballot. Polls will be open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. There will be no opportunity to vote by ballot on Articles 1 through 6 at the second session of the Town Meeting. After the polls close at 7:00 p.m., the ballots will be counted. Incorporated: 1761 Origin: First named Enfieldby settlersft-om Enfield, Connecticut, tlte town was renamed "Relhan" in 1766 to honor Dr. AnthonyRelhan. The doctor wasapromoterofsea bathingasa curative; making Brighton afashionable English resort. The Town was renamed Enfield in 1784after the Revolution. Enfieldwas the site ofa Shaker Communityin theearly 1800's, whose buildings now make-up our "Shaker Village" site, beingformerly occupiedby the LaSalette BrotJterhoodofMontreal. The Shrine ofOurlady ofLaSalette is well known orits Christmas holiday display. Enfield is home toMascoma Lakeand includes the villages ofUpperand Lower Shaker Village, Enfield CenterandLockehaven. Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000 Enfield'spopulations grew by 16.1% to 4, 618, a numeric difference of639. The median age is 38.3 with 21.8% ofthepopulation under theage of18and 10.9%> 65and older. The total numberofhouseholds is 1,975 with an average size of2.33 persons. Ofthose, 1,292 arefamilyhouseholds withan average sizeof2.78 persons. As ofApril 1, 2000, there were 2,372 total housing units. PopulationDensity - Year2000: 114.6personspersquare mileofland area. Enfieldcontains 40.3 square miles oflandarea, and2.9 square miles of inlandwaterarea.
