As authorized by last year's Town Meeting, our tax mapping project is almostcomplete.Thiswillbeamajorassetintheassessmentandidentification ofparcels ofpropertywithin the Town. The Workshop completed a federal grant application for renovations to the Baptist Church. This grant was not approved, but has been resubmitted, andwehavereasontobeoptimisticaboutourchancesthistimearound.Hope- fully, we will know by Town Meeting, and we willbe able to go forward and developthispropertyintoacommunitycenterthatwillserveourtownspeople. Therehavebeen several changes in officers during the year. Marie Meola moved toFlorida after severalyears as ourTownClerkandTaxCollector. The SelectmenappointedSylviaHilltothosepositions, thereforecreatingavacancy ontheBoardofSelectmen. SteveGordon, amemberoftheBudgetCommittee, was appointed to the Selectman's position. LaurieHuntleftastheSelectmen's secretaryafterprovidingexcellentser- vice to the Board, and Christie Phelps isnowperforming those duties. Even with the changes, we have had a good year. For the third year in a row, we were able to reduce the tax rate and for the first time in memory, we did notneed toborrow money in anticipation oftaxes, therefore reducing the expenses ofoperatingthe Town. 1995 was not without its sad note though, with many ofthe senior mem- bersofourcommunitypassingon.WewillallmissReggieGlinesatthedump, aswellasseeingthefamiliarfacesofRuelFord,AnselPowers,KimballPhelps, LizzieAustin and Irene Pulver, and the smile ofJohnTadakowsky. October and November brought unusually heavy rains following a very drysummer, and therewasconsiderabledamagetotheTownroads. TheState wasdeclaredafederaldisasterarea,andwehavereceivedabout$17,000sofar in state and federal aid, withmore to come once all the road repairs are com- pleted. The heavy demands on the Town equipment bring forward the need to tradeour16yearoldloaderinforanewone. Theonewehavenowhascloseto 10,000 hard working hours on it, and has served us well. The Selectmen and the Budget Committee are recommending that we purchase a new one this year. 1995ANNUAL REPORT Page 7 TheSelectmenwould liketowaituntilnextyeartopurchase anewpolice cruiser and even out some of the capital expenses so they are not all at once. Ourpresentcruiserhas about65,000miles onit, andis stillingoodshape. We willbe developing arecycling/separationprogram to reduce the ton- nage of waste at the transfer site, and need everyone's cooperation to make thisprogram effective.
