Presented by The Reverend James C. McLeod, University Chaplain — Doctor of Science Ernest Henry Volwiler Chemist, research executive and business administrator; president-elect of the American Chemical Society; a modern pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry. The anesthetics and sedatives that he has made available to the medical profession have saved the lives of thousands and eased the sufferings of hundreds of thousands. Presented by Robert K. Summerbell, Professor of Chemistry and Chairman of the Department Doctor of Laws — Sumner Huber Slighter Economist, scholar, and educator, now Thomas W. Lamont University Professor in Harvard University. By his research and active participation in labor conflicts he has done much to improve the relations between labor and management; by his leadership in education he has done much to improve the status of his profession, and to advance the frontiers of economics and business education. Wise counselor and adviser of statesmen and business men, he has been a leader and a servant of the society in which we live. Presented by Simeon E. Leland, Professor of Economics and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Doctor of Laws — John D. Wicrhem Lawyer and scholar, onetime Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin, whose salutary influence in education has been extended by hi* able services as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Beloit College; a distinguished jurist whose scholarly opinions as a judge of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin have received wide acclaim, and have influenced the course of the law because of his understanding of its true function. Kennelly Mayor of Chicago, whose public service rises above partisanship and political expediency. As a successfulman ofbusiness,who was a willingleader in charitable and philanthropic enterprises, he won the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens. When, at their request, he assumed the duties of public office, he devoted himself to applying to public affairs the same principles which had won him an enviable reputation in his own commercial undertakings. Burgess, a Trustee of Northwestern University and President of the Board Doctor of Laws — Leverett Saltonstall An honored citizen of a Commonwealth which his ancestors helped to establish; a public servant for over twenty-five years as alderman, state representative, governor, and United States Senator from Massachusetts; president of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University; keen student of our political and social institutions; a loyal friend of higher education, who typifies the best in our American traditions and ideals.
