AUTHOR’S NAMES AND ANONYMS 622 INDEX II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND PERSONAL NAMES 670 INTRODUCTION This thirtyfirst volumeof ABHB (Annual bibliography of the history of the printed book and libraries) contains 5660 records, selected from some 1700 periodicals, the list of which follows this introduction. They have been compiled by the National Committees of the following countries: Arab Countries Latvia Australia Lithuania Austria Luxembourg Belarus Mexico Belgium The Netherlands Bulgaria Norway Canada Poland Croatia Portugal Estonia Romania Finland Russian Federation France Slovakia Great Britain South Africa Hungary Spain Iceland Sweden Ireland Switzerland Italy Ukraine Latin America USA Benevolent readers are requested to signal the names of bibliographers and historians from countries not mentioned above, who would be willing to co-operate to this scheme of international bibliographic collaboration. The editor will greatly appreciate any communication on this matter. Subject As has been said in the introduction to the previous volumes, this biblio- graphy aims at recording all books and articles of scholarly value which relate to the history of the printed book, to the history of the arts, crafts, techniques and equipment, and of the economic, social and cultural envi- ronment, involved in its production, distribution, conservation, and descrip- tion. Of course, the ideal of a complete coverage is nearly impossible to at- tain. However, it is the policy of this publication to include missing items as much as possible in the forthcoming volumes. The same applies to coun- tries newly added to the bibliography. VLII INTRODUCTION Excluded are books and articles on modem technical processes. The his- tory of techniques not primarily connected with book production is only ad- mitted if the publication in question has a bearing on the history of the book, e.g. engraving is only admitted in its book-illustration context. Only items of a scholarly nature are recorded. Of course, there may be good reasons for including a minor paper on a less well-known person or item; however, the Members of the Editorial Board are requested to avoid reporting a mass of ephemeral and popular literature on the great names of the profession, which adds nothing to our knowledge of the subject. Moreover the subject is limited in time. The terminus a quo is the date of birth of the printed book (Korea, Gutenberg), in the first half of the fif- teenth century. Studies on manuscripts, papermaking, bookbinding, etc., prior to that data are not reported. They remain the subject for other bibli- ographies, such as the Bulletin codicologique, published in Scriptorium. An exception is made in favour of early blockprinting in the Far East and of palaeographical material of importance for the history of type design. The terminus ad quem is to-day, but only if the study has been written entirely or partly from an historical point of view. Items on modern artists or on modem printing techniques are therefore not accepted, unless they ac- cord with this criterion. Bibliography of the descriptive and analytical variety, i.e. the technique of detailed book description and the use of inference based on book- production practice to throw light on textual history, falls naturally within the scope of this bibliography, but it must be stressed that enumerative bibliographies, find a place here only when they satisfy one or more of the following criteria: (a) if their subject-matter is relevant, e.g. bibliographies of printing his- tory, or (b) if they include a detailed analysis of the physical make-up, or (c) if they make a substantial contribution to the national bibliographical record from the point of view of the history of the book and the li- brary. Catalogues of exhibitions and collections, or of antiquarian booksellers and sale catalogues, are included if they are retrospective in scope or if an historical theme or an important collection has been treated in some depth. Editions of literary and historical texts are recorded if their introductions are important for the history of printing and collecting. Facsimile editions are omitted unless they qualify for inclusion either for their introduction or on the grounds of relevant subject-matter or of special typographical inter- est. Relevant doctoral dissertations are included if they are published, either normally or in microform. Book reviews are included, if they are critical and supplement the book reviewed. For several reasons this volume does not contain contributions from Luxembourg, Norway and Romania. We hope to receive their contributions in the near future. The editorial board of volume 31 has been strenghtened by Nathalie Laquerre (France), Anna Manfron (Italy), Katherine McCann and Ruby Meraz Gutierrez (Latin America). We welcome them cordially. Since 1989, staff members of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek have formed the editorial board of ABHB. From then on a cumulative database has been built to produce camera-ready copy of ABHB for Kluwer Academic Publishers. On request of the international bookworld, this database is been made accessible to the public. In May 2001 the Koninklijke Bibliotheek launched
