L.M.Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is among the world’s best-known and most enduringly popular novels in English.First published in  by a Boston firm,L.C.Page and Company, Annewent into ten editions within a year, and it has remained in print ever since.Indeed, new editions have appeared in greater numbers than ever since the novel entered the public domain in the United States in and in Canada in .In ,Books in Print(Bowker’s) lists forty-one editions of the novel, eleven of which are new;in –,forty-two are listed, five of which are new. These numbers do not include related texts, such as adapta- tions for younger children, cookbooks, paper doll books, and daybooks, which, while text-based,are also collateral commodi- ties representing the massive and growing types of “Anne” merchandise that are such potent indices of the continuing appeal of Montgomery’s novel. It might thus seem rather unnecessary  See “It All Began with Anne”by Molly Colin,Publishers’Weekly(Oct.): –.Anne of Green Gablesis still protected by copyright in some locations.  “Anne”merchandise goes well beyond dolls and is far too varied and numerous to describe in detail here. See Jeannette Lynes, “Consumable Avonlea: The Commodification of the Green Gables Mythology,”in Making Avonlea:L.M.Montgomery and Popular Culture (Toronto:U of Toronto P,) –;Cecily Devereux, “‘Canadian Classic’and ‘Commodity Export’:The Nationalism of ‘Our’Anne of Green Gables,”Journal of Canadian Studies.():–;Grieg Dymond and Geoff Pevere, Mondo Canuck:A Canadian Pop Culture Odyssey(Scarborough,ON:Prentice-Hall,) –. For a discussion of the imaginary Avonlea represented in the Sullivan Entertainment series Road to Avonlea, see Aspasia Kostopoulos,“Our Avonlea:Imagining Community in an Imaginary Past,”Pop Can:Popular Culture in Canada,ed.Lynne Van Luven and Priscilla L.Walton (Scarborough,ON:Prentice-Hall,) –.See also the range of articles in Making Avonlea:L.M.Montgomery and Popular Culture,ed.Irene Gammel,Toronto:U of Toronto P,.An important document of the value of the “Anne”commodity is the report of the decision in “Anne of Green Gables Licensing Authority Inc.et al.v.Avonlea Traditions Inc.,”Court File No.-CU-,Ontario Superior Court of Justice,Wilson J.Heard,November – and –,. Judgement rendered March ,.Canadian Patent Reporter,th ser.(Aurora,ON,      Anne main 10/6/04 9:42 AM Page 8 Review Copy to add yet another edition to this throng. The need, however, for an edition that can be used, like the elegant and comprehensive Annotated Anne published in by Oxford University Press, for informed reading,as well as for secondary and post-secondary teaching, has been apparent for some time:the appearance in the past few years of study guides suggests that Anne of Green Gables is figuring increasingly on pre-university curricula;and Carole Gerson has recently shown that Anne is also appearing more frequently in university literature courses (see Gerson,“Anne Goes to University,”in Making Avonlea,ed.Irene Gammel,U of Toronto P,).This edition is intended to provide a usable scholarly text of the novel with relevant contextual materials for reading and teaching. Canada Law Book,) –.This judgement upheld the validity of the trade- marks of “Anne of Green Gables”and images of “Anne.”   Anne main 10/6/04 9:42 AM Page 9 Review Copy Acknowledgements This edition of Anne of Green Gablesowes a great deal to a great many people.Debbie Muttart,Kevin Rice, and Judy Simpson at the Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown,Prince Edward Island, were extremely helpful and generous in making the manuscript available to me,answering many questions, and finding places for me to work.I am also grateful to the librari- ans and staff at many libraries and archives, including the Public Archives of Prince Edward Island; the University of Prince Edward Island Library,Special Collections;the National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada;the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library; the Osborne Collection in the Toronto Public Library; the Metro Reference Library in Toronto;the L.M.Montgomery collection in the Archives at the University of Guelph;the University of Alberta Library and the Bruce Peel Special Collections at the University of Alberta,as well as the L.M.Montgomery Institute.I would like to thank graduate assistants Jennifer Chambers and Tasha Ausman for carefully checking the text, and Archana Rampure and Paul Chafe for preliminary research.Family, friends and colleagues supported this project in many ways:thanks to Benet,Jeremy, Joan and Joanna Devereux,Chris Gittings,Susan Hamilton, Michelle Jackson,Connie Langille-Rowe,Benjamin Lefebvre, Jennifer Litster,Jo-Ann Wallace and Stephanie Wood;thanks to Kate Macdonald Butler and Sally Cohen;special thanks to Scott, and to my daughters,Lucy and Susan Wright. Finally,I wish to express my gratitude to the University of Alberta Faculty of Arts for generously supporting this project.Material from the intro- duction appeared in different forms in The Journal of Canadian Studies and Canadian Children’s Literature, and is included here with permission. All errors are my own.
