Work began in earnest as I prepared three lectures titled “Anna and the House of Converts,” which were delivered during my tenure as the Shier Distinguished Professor of Jewish History at the University of Toronto in 2008, where I was warmly received by Derek Penslar and my friends Nich- olas Terpstra and Natalie Zemon Davis. Subsequently, I had the great for- tune to spend extended periods in two very special places: first, the Diamond Library of the Columbia University School of Law, one of the great col- lections of medieval and early modern law, whose possessions, as cited in this study, have been previously unknown. I had the privilege of using this collection for my doctoral dissertation decades ago, and now I was privileged to return, in 2011, as a Bodini Scholar of the Italian Academy for Advanced Study at Columbia. I thank the entire staff of the Academy, particularly David Freedberg and Barbara Faedda, and so very much my colleague at the Academy and lasting friend, Francesco Cioffi, for making my time there so profitable, as well as pleasant.
