By ask ing quest ions such as ‘What is typi cal about this player?’ and ‘Why is he so succ essf ul?’ you will work out what chara ct er ises his chess style. By imi tat ing this in your own games, you will have prac ti cal suc cesses to cel e brate. In this book, the world class Swedi sh player Ulf Andersson is taken as such a model and his games are in vest i gated. Andersson’s best days as an over-the- board player (bef ore in later years he succ essf ully de voted his time to cor res pond ence chess) were in the 1970s and 1980s, that is to say bef ore my own time as a chess player. In the mid 1990s I, as an up-and-com ing young player, had the opp or tu nity to cross swords on two occ as ions with the exp er ie nced vet eran. Our first game was played in 1996 and I had to adm it def eat aft er 91 moves – witho ut rea lly und er- standi ng what I had done wrong! I simp ly felt that my only prob lem was that I had had to def end that par ticu lar endi ng against Andersson and not against some other player. Theref ore I was ext remely mot i vated when it came to our next en count er. I had to wait alm ost a year bef ore it took place and on that occ as ion I had the white pieces! I tried to put as much press ure on him as I could, but I felt as though I was bangi ng my head against a brick wall. All my eff orts were in vain and the game ended in a draw. Of course, bef ore these face to face enc ount ers with him, I had made an int en sive study of Andersson’s games. In add it ion to his alm ost pro verb ial endg ame tech - nique, there are many other face ts to his play. It is rem arka ble for its clar ity, and yet he also knows how to get the upp er hand in comp lic ated sit u a tions, as for exa mp le is shown by the games in the chapt er ‘The Art of Def ence’. A fur ther char ac ter is tic theme, the po si tional ex change sac ri fice, would be come a lasti ng comp on ent of my own chess repe r toire through the games of Andersson as well as those of my abs ol ute fa vour ite chess player – the 9th world champ ion Tigran Petrosian. It gives me great pleas ure to see that on one hand this work hono urs the crea tive ef- forts of Andersson and on the other lays bef ore the reader the most outs tandi ng traini ng ma te rial. I find it par ticu l arly imp or tant that sub tlet ies are dealt with which will ad vance your fut ure chess de velo pm ent: now ad ays, peop le are far too used to the opin ions of comp uter prog rams, and ev ery book which moves us to do some thinki ng for ours elves is an imp or tant supp lem ent to that. This book opens our eyes to what rea lly makes a world class chess player! Guido Kern and Jürgen Kaufeld have sel ected the games with great care and pres- ent a many-facetted ins ight into ‘world class chess strat egy’. The imp or tant ele - 9 IN TRO DUC TION You will perh aps be wond er ing why we have writ ten a man ual on strat egy that con- tains exc lus ively the games of Swedi sh grandm ast er Ulf Andersson. The ans wer: as we anal ysed many games, we reali sed that the clear and purely pos it ional playi ng style of Andersson is sup erbly well suited to the ill ust ra tion of stra te gic themes. For those who wish to imp rove their pos it ional play and techn ique, these games will be of great ben ef it. In our years of ex per ie nce as chess traine rs, dur ing which many of our tal ented young play ers earned ti tles, we have al ways noted how ext remely nece ss ary it was to bring up to a high stand ard their techn ique and pos it ional und ers tandi ng in ord er for them to achieve succ ess in their chess praxis. When traini ng play ers who are am- bit ious and who have the ca paci ty to make progr ess, one oft en no tices a cer tain stag- na tion of their playi ng strength when the main foc us of the chess traini ng has been only on openi ngs and middlegame tact ics. Tact ics do play an enor mous part in mod - ern chess now ad ays and work with chess prog rams (which alm ost ev ery club and tour nam ent player is able to take ad vant age of) has conf erred on the calc ul a tion of vari a tions a greater value than was the case in the pre-comp uter era. But ev ery chess player who takes part in tour nam ents app rec ia tes the diff i culty of con vert ing to a win the ad vant ages which have been achieved (be they pos it ional or ma te rial). It is mainly lack of techn ic al skills which makes vict ory diff i cult or imp oss ib le. And yet it is not as diff ic ult as is comm only bel ieved to acq uire the tech ni cal and tac- ti cal metho ds which aid the realis a tion of ad vant ages in chess. In this conn ect ion the prese nt book is aimed at plugg ing a gap. It is theref ore very well suited for use with up-and-com ing play ers. As you play through the games it is fasc in at ing to rec ogn ise the fac ili ty and prec i- sion with which Andersson achieves his goals. Chess play ers of vary ing strengths and styles will enor mously imp rove their abili ties and sim ult an eously inc rease their po- sit ional sense as a res ult of caref ul study of the ann ot ated games, which have been clas si fied ac cord ing to var i ous middlegame and end game themes. Andersson is cons ide red to be one of the most im por tant endg ame ex perts. His chess style res emb les that of the lege nda ry world champ ion Capablanca and in his abili ty to hand le closed pos it ions in mast erly fashi on also that of the later world champ ion Tigran Petrosian. Among chess mast ers ‘endg ame techn ique à la Andersson’ has been given the sta tus of a tradem ark. His sign if ic ance as a player can be seen at first glance from the long numb er of years he has spent among the abs ol ute world chess elite. His most succ essf ul per iod was at the be ginn ing of the 1980s, when he occ up ied 4th place in the world ranki ng lists. Ano ther highl ight of his ca reer was his nomi n a tion to the place of first board in the ‘USSR vers us the rest of the world’ match in 1984. In rec ent years Ulf Andersson has also turned to cor res pond ence chess, reach ing the first place in the world rank- 11 Grand mas ter Chess Strat egy ing list in 2002. In Ger many Ulf Andersson was for sev eral years a succ essf ul mem - ber of the SG Porz team in the top div i sion of the Bundesliga. If you are a fan of stra te gic openi ngs such as the Engl ish, the Catal an or the Hedgeh og, you will find in this book valua ble inf or ma tion for your openi ng repe r - toire. There are even two chapt ers de voted to ar eas conn ected with these openi ngs, namely the Catal an and the Hedgeh og, and these pro vide in struct ive comm ents on middlegame strat egy and on the trans it ion to the end game. We have gene ra lly pref erred to prese nt comp lete games in ord er to rend er more transp ar ent the in div id ual trans it ions from one phase of the game to the next. This way the reader will acq uire a not icea bly better und ers tandi ng of the flow of the whole game than he or she would if only parts of games were shown. Of course, in Andersson’s games im por tant tact i cal ele m ents play just as imp or - tant a role as the pos it ional ones. This will be made clear above all in the chapt ers on the ‘po si tional queen sac ri fice’ and the ‘po si tional ex change sac ri fice’. Gen er ally speaki ng, it is far from easy to at trib ute in div id ual stra te gic themes to games, though when we were deali ng with the subj ect of the ‘pos it ional queen sacr if ice’ this created no diff ic ult ies what soe ver, since this crea tive mot if is abun dantly prese nt in Andersson’s play. Here too, we can once more find a para ll el to ex-world champ ion Tigran Petrosian, who was a rec ogn ised spec iali st in this area. Bec ause Andersson’s play was marked by pract i cal and tech ni cal cons ide ra tions, it is cer tain that many of his games ended as draws. The just i fi ca tion for this is that for many years he was in cont en tion with the very top play ers in the world and at that level po si tional and tech ni cal ca pa bil i ties are ex traor di narily high. Nev er the less, as we have alr eady emphasised, his games are of great in struct ional value for amb it ious players who want to achieve a higher level of comp et ence in strat egy and endg ame tech nique. If you wish to test your abili ty to find good plans, ideas and forci ng tact i cal varia - tions, we in vite you to work on the quest ions which we have asked at par ticu l arly ex- citi ng and ins truct ive stages of the games. These quest ions have been highl ighted in the text. A white square next to the dia gram ind i cates that White is to move, a black one means that it is Black’s turn. We reco mm end that you use a sheet of pa per to cover the game con tin u a tion and not to read on unt il you have thought things through deeply by yours elf. We hope that the playi ng through of the games will help you make imp or tant disc ov er ies for your own praxis and that in do ing so you will imp rove your pos i- tional und ers tandi ng. Guido Kern and Jurgen Kaufeld 12 Grand mas ter Chess Strat egy CHAP TER 4 PRO PHY LAXIS Prop hyl act ic thinki ng is cer tainly one of the most imp or tant themes in pos it ional play. Aaron Nimzowitsch in dic ated in his day that the pre vent ion of the opp on ent’s counterplay, or prop hyl axis, is of sup reme importance. Prop hyl act ic thinki ng is req uired in ev ery phase of a chess game. This is not only true for def ens ive pos it ions where you have to try and see through the at tacki ng ef- forts bei ng made by your opp on ent, but also in the at tack when you have to take into acc ount the lat ter’s def ens ive res ources. When reali si ng an ad vant age, it is also very imp or tant to limit the poss ib ili ties open to the def ence, to cons truct your search for a plan on that bas is and to fores ee poss ib le tact i cal obs tac les. In alm ost all of his books the outs tandi ng Russ ian grandm ast er trainer Mark Dvoretsky has highl ighted the imp or tance of prop hyl axis and il lust rated this with exa mp les drawn from his praxis as a trainer. If you study this theme in depth, then your tact i cal abili t ies will au to mat i cally im prove. You will pay in creas ing at ten tion to the re sources avail able to your opp on ent and to do that you have to pene t rate into the sub tlet ies of the rel ated tact ics. Tigran Petrosian and Anatoli Kar pov made exc ell ent use of prop hyl axis and their playi ng style is sim i lar. When one gets down to it, proba bly all the great chess champ io ns studied this absolutely fundamental theme in order to further their chess development. In the first exa mp le, Christiansen-Andersson, in a Hedgeh og Black demo ns trates the flexi ble def ens ive poss ib ili t ies of that par ticu lar set-up. At the time the game was played, the stra te gic metho ds to be used in the Hedgeh og had not yet been com- pletely worked out. White some what op ti mist i cally ext ended his kingside pawn phal anx and tried to over run the black pos it i on . Andersson stopped the at tack with an origi n al and subt le reg roupi ng of his pieces and then went over to the count er-at - tack in the cent re. White’s slightly too dynamic set-up was drastically punished. The game Andersson-Sokolov is a model ex amp le of the min or ity at tack. White pro phy lac ti cally an tic i pates his op po nent’s at tack ing ef forts, then takes over the ini - tia tive bef ore goi ng on to cash in on his ad vant age by capt ur ing the backward c6 pawn. Aft er a fa voura ble open ing in Ahlander-Andersson there arose a blocked pos it i on with a bad white bishop. By tar geted, pro phyl act ic def ens ive moves, Black nipped Black’s at tempts at at tack in the bud bef ore mov ing over to a succ essf ul count er-at tack. The game Andersson-Markowski is proof that prop hyl act ic thinki ng is even possible when at tacki ng. The poor move 18...h5 palp a bly weak ened Black’s king position. Andersson found a prof ound prop hyl act ic move which led, aft er forced exchanges, to a strong at tacki ng pos it i on . Black tried in vain to hold his pos it i on to - gether, but fin ally lost the game to a nice piece of tactics. 56 Chap ter 4 – Pro phy laxis No. 17 (cid:110) ..ddTTtt..__MM__ Lar ry Chris ti an sen __LL__..llJJjj..
