PapersPastdoes nothaveChristchurchnewspapersafter1920sothatanyonewishingtoexplorelatereditions willhavetotrythepubliclibrarynewspaperarchivesandsoforth. AttheAGMin1905theSydenham&AddingtonCricketClubdisbandedandanewSydenham DistrictCricketClubwasimmediatelyformedunderguidelinesestablishedbytheCCA. SydenhamwasoneofthesixbrandnewclubsformedtotakepartintheCCA'snewdistrict competitionsinallgrades. EachnewclubhadageographicalboundarydefinedbytheCCAand onehadtoplayfortheclubwithinwhoseboundariesoneresided.Thiswasabigbreakfrom thepreviousclubsystemwhichsinceitsstartin1882-83hadconcentratedthebestplayersina verysmallnumberofclubsyearafteryear,infactdecadeafterdecade,makingithardfornew playersofabilitytobreakintoestablishedcombinations. Inestablishingthedistrictformat,theCCAwasfollowingtheleadofsuccessfuldistrict competitionsdevelopedinAustraliaandAuckland. Districtcricketwashighlysuccessfulin ChristchurchforanumberofseasonsbutbecameuntenableduringtheGreatWarduetothe massivelossofplayerstothefront,forcingtheCCAtorelaxtheresidentialrequirementfor membershipofclubsinin1915. Thebalance-sheetwasadopted. MrCaygillmovedthatasystemofdistrictmatchestotaketheplaceofCupcricketshouldbe inaugurated.Mostofthecriticismlevelledagainsttheproposalhadbeenagainstthepartial districtscheme.HecouldnotagreewiththosewhoassertedthatNewZealandwastoosmall fordistrictcricket;itwasreasonabletosupposethatthe60,000inhabitantsofChristchurch shouldbeabletofindplayersenoughforsixdistricts.Itwasaprogressiveschemewhichhad provedasuccessinSydney,andwouldinducethepublictotakeanaddedinterestinthegame. MrRidleysecondedthemotion,remarkingthat,thoughtheprospectsoftheschemedidnot appeartohimsorosyastothemover,hethoughtitwellworthyoftrial. MrVincentsaidhewouldpreferapartialschemetotheout-and-outscheme,ashethought therewouldbedifficultyatfirstinthewayofarranginggrounds.Heconsidered,however,that districtcricketwouldcausemorepublicinteresttobetakeninthegame. Themotionwasthenputandcarriedby15votesto5. Itwasthenunanimouslyresolvedthattheout-and-outdistrictschemebeadopted. OnthemotionofMrCaygill,itwasdecidedthatdistrictclubsshouldbeformedforSt.Albans, Riccarton,Linwood,Sydenham,ChristchurchEast,andChristchurchWest. TheSydenhamCricketClubhelditsannualmeetingonMonday.MrJ.N.Fowkepresided,and therewereaboutthirtymemberspresent.Theannualreportstatedthatthesecondgrade teampossessedasplendidrecordtorlastseason,onlylosingonematch,andthatbyonlyone run.Theteamhadwonthesecondgradecup.MrW.C.H.Wigley'strophyhadbeenawarded toE.R.Caygill,forthemostconsistentplayduringtheseason,andMrBaldwin'sbattoMrH. Harrisforfielding.TheDistrictCricketschemehadbeenapprovedofbytheclub,andthenew SydenhamDistrictClubwouldstartwithoutanyfinancialburden,andwithasupplyofmaterial. Thebalance-sheetshowedreceipts£11414s9d,andexpenditure£11318s9d,leavingacredit- balanceof16s.Theassetswere£2266s,andtherewerenoliabilities.Thereportandbalance- sheetwereadopted.Avoteofthankswasaccordedtotheofficers,andtheclubdisbanded.A meetingwasthenheldtoformanewclub,inaccordancewiththeDistrictCricketscheme.It wasresolvedtoformanewclub,tobecalledtheSydenhamCricketClub,andthedraftrules proposedbytheCanterburyCricketAssociationwereadoptedwithsmallamendments.The coloursadoptedweremaroon,blueandwhite.Theratesofsubscriptiondecideduponwere thoserecommendedbytheCricketAssociation.Nodefinitesubscriptionmasfixedforhonorary members,butamotionwasadopteddeclaringthatonlyhonorarymemberssubscribing£11s annuallyshouldbeentitledtotakepartintheaffairsoftheclub.
