PapersPastdoes nothaveChristchurchnewspapersafter1920sothatanyonewishingtoexplorelatereditions willhavetotrythepubliclibrarynewspaperarchivesandsoforth. AttheAGMin1905theSydenham&AddingtonCricketClubdisbandedandanewSydenham DistrictCricketClubwasimmediatelyformedunderguidelinesestablishedbytheCCA. SydenhamwasoneofthesixbrandnewclubsformedtotakepartintheCCA'snewdistrict competitionsinallgrades. EachnewclubhadageographicalboundarydefinedbytheCCAand onehadtoplayfortheclubwithinwhoseboundariesoneresided.Thiswasabigbreakfrom thepreviousclubsystemwhichsinceitsstartin1882-83hadconcentratedthebestplayersina verysmallnumberofclubsyearafteryear,infactdecadeafterdecade,makingithardfornew playersofabilitytobreakintoestablishedcombinations. Inestablishingthedistrictformat,theCCAwasfollowingtheleadofsuccessfuldistrict competitionsdevelopedinAustraliaandAuckland. Districtcricketwashighlysuccessfulin ChristchurchforanumberofseasonsbutbecameuntenableduringtheGreatWarduetothe massivelossofplayerstothefront,forcingtheCCAtorelaxtheresidentialrequirementfor membershipofclubsinin1915. Thebalance-sheetwasadopted. MrCaygillmovedthatasystemofdistrictmatchestotaketheplaceofCupcricketshouldbe inaugurated.Mostofthecriticismlevelledagainsttheproposalhadbeenagainstthepartial districtscheme.HecouldnotagreewiththosewhoassertedthatNewZealandwastoosmall fordistrictcricket;itwasreasonabletosupposethatthe60,000inhabitantsofChristchurch shouldbeabletofindplayersenoughforsixdistricts.Itwasaprogressiveschemewhichhad provedasuccessinSydney,andwouldinducethepublictotakeanaddedinterestinthegame. MrRidleysecondedthemotion,remarkingthat,thoughtheprospectsoftheschemedidnot appeartohimsorosyastothemover,hethoughtitwellworthyoftrial. MrVincentsaidhewouldpreferapartialschemetotheout-and-outscheme,ashethought therewouldbedifficultyatfirstinthewayofarranginggrounds.Heconsidered,however,that districtcricketwouldcausemorepublicinteresttobetakeninthegame. Themotionwasthenputandcarriedby15votesto5. Itwasthenunanimouslyresolvedthattheout-and-outdistrictschemebeadopted. OnthemotionofMrCaygill,itwasdecidedthatdistrictclubsshouldbeformedforSt.Albans, Riccarton,Linwood,Sydenham,ChristchurchEast,andChristchurchWest. Thefollowingruleswereconsideredandadopted:— (1)Aclubshallbecomposedofmembers whohaveresidedwithintheboundariesoftheirdistrictnotlessthanfourmonthspriortothe 1stOctoberineachyear.Anyplayerchanginghisresidenceonorafter1stJuneshallplayfor thedistrictinwhichhewasresidingonthatdate.Nothinginthisruleshallpreventaresidentor anydistrictfrombecominganhonorarymemberofanyotherdistrictclub.(2)Anyplayer arrivingafter1stJunemaybeallowedtoplayforthedistrictinwhichheisresidingupon satisfyingtheCompetitionsCommitteethatheintendstobecomeabonafideresident.(3)That allAssociationmatchesinwhichdistrictorschoolclubteamsareengagedshallbeplayedunder thisAssociation'srulesforCupmatches.(4)Thatgroundsbeallocatedtothevariousdistrict clubsasfollows:LancasterPark:ChristchurchEastandLinwood;HagleyPark:Christchurch West,Riccarton,andSt.Albans;SydenhamPark:Sydenham.(5)ThatplayersresidingintheSt. Albansdistrictusetheirbestendeavourtoobtainsuitablecricketgroundwithintheboundaries ofthatdistrict,atasearlyadateaspossible,andthatthisAssociationgivesallassistanceinits power,bothfinanciallyandotherwise,tofurthersuchaproject,(6)That,boundariesof districts,assuggested,besubjecttorevisionatthecloseofseason. Asub-committee,consistingofMessrsCaygill,Raphael,andThomsonwasappointedto interviewtheHagleyParkGroundCommitteeinreferencetotheappointmentoftrustees,in whompavilionsandotherpropertyshouldbeinvested. BOUNDARIESOFTHEDISTRICTS. TheestablishmentofaschemeofdistrictcricketisnowanaccomplishedfactinCanterbury, andhopesareentertainedthatunderthenewsystemmarkedimprovementwillresultinlocal cricket.AtThursday'smeetingoftheCanterburyCricketAssociation,theboundariesofthe districtswereagreedto,andbelowaregiventhedetailsofthelimitsofthedistricts:-- SYDENHAMDISTRICT CommencingattheterminationofHillsroad,thencenortherlyalongthesaidroadtoWilson's road,alongWilson'sroadtoShakespeareroad,alongShakespeareroadtoFalsgravestreet, alongFalsgravestreettoMoorhouseavenue,alongMoorhousetoSelwynstreet,thence southerlyalongSelwynstreettoSelwynroad,alongSelwynroadtoMiltonstreet,alongMilton streettoWildernessroad,southeasterlyalongWildernessroadtoPortHills,includingPortHills betweenthelinesofWildernessroadandHillsroad. LINWOODDISTRICT. Allthatdistricttothesouth-westofthenorthernrailwaytoStrowanroad,alongStrowanroad andBoundaryroadtoriverAvon,thencealongtheriverAvontotheWestbelt,alongtheWest belttoitsjunctionwithMoorhouseavenue,alongMoorhouseavenuetoSelwynstreet,along SelwynstreettoSelwynroad,alongSelwynroadtoMiltonstreet,alongMiltonstreetto Wildernessroad,andincludingallthatdistricttothesouth-westoftheboundaryofthe Sydenhamdistrict. CHRISTCHURCHEASTDISTRICT. AllthatdistrictboundedonthenorthbyBealeyavenue,ontheeastbyFitzgeraldavenue,on thesouthbyMoorhouseavenue,andonthewestbyManchesterStreet. CHRISTCHURCHWESTDISTRICT. TheSydenhamCricketClubhelditsannualmeetingonMonday.MrJ.N.Fowkepresided,and therewereaboutthirtymemberspresent.Theannualreportstatedthatthesecondgrade teampossessedasplendidrecordtorlastseason,onlylosingonematch,andthatbyonlyone run.Theteamhadwonthesecondgradecup.MrW.C.H.Wigley'strophyhadbeenawarded toE.R.Caygill,forthemostconsistentplayduringtheseason,andMrBaldwin'sbattoMrH. Harrisforfielding.TheDistrictCricketschemehadbeenapprovedofbytheclub,andthenew SydenhamDistrictClubwouldstartwithoutanyfinancialburden,andwithasupplyofmaterial. Thebalance-sheetshowedreceipts£11414s9d,andexpenditure£11318s9d,leavingacredit- balanceof16s.Theassetswere£2266s,andtherewerenoliabilities.Thereportandbalance- sheetwereadopted.Avoteofthankswasaccordedtotheofficers,andtheclubdisbanded.A meetingwasthenheldtoformanewclub,inaccordancewiththeDistrictCricketscheme.It wasresolvedtoformanewclub,tobecalledtheSydenhamCricketClub,andthedraftrules proposedbytheCanterburyCricketAssociationwereadoptedwithsmallamendments.The coloursadoptedweremaroon,blueandwhite.Theratesofsubscriptiondecideduponwere thoserecommendedbytheCricketAssociation.Nodefinitesubscriptionmasfixedforhonorary members,butamotionwasadopteddeclaringthatonlyhonorarymemberssubscribing£11s annuallyshouldbeentitledtotakepartintheaffairsoftheclub. Christchurchcricketerswerefavouredwithanidealdayfortheopeningoftheseasonon Saturday,andthevariousgroundshadtoacertainextentrecoveredfromtheeffectsofthe recentheavyrains.AneweraInthegame,bythesubstitutionofdistrictforclubcricket,was inaugurated,andallofthenewcombinations.hadlargemustersofplayers.Afternoonteawas providedineachofthepavilions,andwaspartakenofbytheplayersandspectators,thelatter ofwhomattendedingoodlynumbers,whichgivespromiseofthenewschemecausingmore interesttothepublic.Details:— ST.ALBANSDISTRICTCLUB. Thisclub'smatchatHagleyParkonSaturdaywasbetweenapickedelevenandtherestofthe club.Thelatterweregivenfirstinnings,andbattingthirty-twomen,theykeptpossessionofthe wicketstilljustbeforefiveo'clock,whentheventurewasbroughttoaclosefor140. Stubberfieldwastopscorerwith25,whileW.Hopkinsmade15,G.HornerandTodhunter13 each,andF.Horner12.Greenwood,T.W.Reese,andVincentwerethemostsuccessfulofthe bowlerstriedfortheeleven,whowerealldisposedofjustonthecalloftimefor58(O'Brien18 andVincent11).ThompsonandDeaconbowledbestfortheclub. WESTCHRISTCHURCHDISTRICTCLUB. ThematchplayedbythisclubatHagleyParkwasalsobetweenapickedelevenandthe remainderoftheclub.Thelatter,battingfirst,madeonly68,althoughtwenty-sixmenwentto thecrease.OnlyWilder(11)obtaineddoublefigures,thebowlingofMaloneandE.H.Frankish accountingtormostoftheplayersalmostassoonastheywentin.Theelevencommencedto batshortlybeforefiveo'clock,andjustbeforetimewasupthelastwicketfellfor54(J.D. Lawrence12).WestonandLaverybowledwellforthewinners,whothuswonby14runs. RICCARTONDISTRICTCLUB.
