A "Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society membership is
$10.00 for the calendar year and includes one subscription
to the quarterly, ANCESTORS WEST. Dues are payable by Feb
ruary 1st. Members joining after July 1st will be required
to pay but half the annual dues and will receive the last
two issues of the quarterly for that year. Special consid
eration is given for Life, Associate and Honorary members.
The Society meets -the first Saturday of each month from 10
AM to 3 PM at Room 1, Goleta Community Center, 5689 Hollis-
ter Avenue, Goleta, California for class instruetion,busi
ness session and workshop, using the Society library. Atten
dance of visitors is warmly encouraged.
ANCESTORS WEST is published quarterly in March, June, Septem
ber and December. Non-member subscriptions are $6.00 per an
num. Single copies of current and back issues are $1.50,de
pending on availability. The rate for advertising is $3.00
for the first 20 words and 10 cents for each additional word.
Exchange advertising from genealogical and historical period
icals is welcomed. Contributions of a genealogical or his
torical nature will be accepted as space allows. Queries are
encouraged. Quotes and reviews from pieces appearing in
ANCESTORS WEST have the approval of the Society if the source
is credited.

EDITORIAL
This page originally was reserved for an account of the visitation
of the General Secretary of the Federation of Family History Societi
es, Mr. Colin R. Chapman, of Cambridge, GloucestshIre, England, an
nounced in the June ANCESTORS WEST. When it was found that the August
2nd date coincided with dates of the Santa Barbara Old Spanish Days
Fiesta and the Summer Courses on Community and Local History at UCSB,
Mr. Chapman rearranged his schedule so that he would arrive on July 31
and depart on Wednesday, August 6, going direct to Salt Lake City to
set up the exhibit booth of the Federation at the World Conference at
which he is also one of the scheduled speakers. Included in the exhi
bit are the 1979-1980 ANCESTORS WEST quarterlies, the Shelf List of the
Gledhill Library, published by SBCGS and the Santa Barbara Historical
Society, and a sample of the Presidio notepaper with the Russell Ruiz
drawing.
Many members of the Society participated in arrangements, entertain
ment and furnishing of housing, Including Mary Ellen Galbraith, Ike and
Joy Bonilla, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Stevens, guests from Ventura and Santa
Maria, Nancy Cole, Burr Coryell, Karen Heritage, Bernice Mendillo, Fr
ank Smith, Weston Kinsley, Alma and Carl Lauritsen, Marie LaBreche,Vir
ginia and James Paddock, Sylvia Hanna, Arlene and John Doty with a chi
cken barbecue at their Winchester Canyon home picnic area, Amy and John
Marwede, Frank and Ruth Norris, Harry Titus, Frank Harville, Bette Root,
Victor South. About 75 attended the August 2nd lecture, and some 25 or
30 a dinner on Monday evening at Harry'sPlaza with its array of enlarged
early Santa Barbara movie-day photographs. Reports should be forthcom
ing at the September meeting when this quarterly will be distributed.
Mr. Chapman proved to be an able and informative speaker - by profes
sion a nuclear physicist and much younger than many anticipated. With
delightful humor, he called out attention to Americanisms of English
name8 - Berkeley, pronounced burrkley not Barclay, Hertford pronounced
Hartford, Hugenot pronounced In the French manner with a silent "t",etc.
Had he known he night have added Methuen, the birthplace of your editor,
in England Meth-wen, in Massachusetts Me-thu-en, with emphasis on the
second syllable. He also called attention to the fact that in England
the general secretary is the principal officer - the equivalent of presi
dent in America. There the^president is a figurehead, appointed for rea
sons of social or other prestige.
Announcement of the August 2nd afternoon meeting in the Faulkner Gal
lery of the Santa Barbara Public Library was made in the Unne issue of
ANCESTORS WEST. At that time SBCGS had no knowledge that the Summer
Seminars at UCSB would include on that very day sessions open to commun
ity residents. Our member Patricia Meade White was one of the special
ists invited to meet the Seminar leaders on August 1st; probably because
of her interest in Irish history and the fact that Alan Rogers of North
Ireland was to be one of the speakers. He too was scheduled to go to
Salt Lake City for the World Conference, as was Professor Bloxham of
Brigham Young University.
Announcement has been made in the August 10 issue of the Santa Bar
bara News Press of a projected History Fair to be held at UCSB in the
Spring of 1981. Co-directors of the project are Thomas Fuller, associ
ate director of the UCSB program and Gayle Olson, a doctoral candidate
and former high school teacher. People who would like to work with
the staff or with students, toward the exhibition, are urged to contact
Fuller or Ms. Olson at the UCSB history department. We trust there will
be a generous response by Society members.
