Exchange advertising with other magazines is solicited, PHESIDENT^ MESSAGE For the second month in a row our new member list has continued to grow. At the February meeting another 9, newcomers joined our organization! even more than last month. It was great to see the new faces and the enthusiasm that comes with them. Our membership, as of 9 Feb. stands at 53 of which 17 have joined us for the first time. It is always rice to welcome new members like Wanda Purdum. Almost simultaneiously with her joining she donated an in dex to the MONNET Genealogy and volunteered to help us copy courthouse records for publication in future quarterlies. She is indeed an asset to our Society. Our regular monthly meeting in May (7 May) will be something different in meeting site, format and time schedule* The library rooms will not be available to us so,we are, sponsoring pur first social event/fund raiser;of the year. The site1. my homej the timet from 1PM to 4- H*? the format1 informal conversation! refreshments on the. patio and a silent auction. Members, spouses and guests are'invited. For'those who are not familiar with a silent auction, it works in this manner, We will all donate some of the "white elephants" we would like to part with (no*limit as to' number)• They may or may not apply to genealogy but may be vasesj tools', pictures, Office supplies, plants, games, jewelry, antiques, books,' or whatever. 'The items will be placed on tables by catagory with a slip of paper affixed to'each one. Your bid (whi.ch may start at 10 unless a minimum beginning bid is noted) is to be recorded on the paper by writing the.amount.offered and:your, name, From then on the pace quickens. It will be up to you during the course' of the afternoon's conversations and,re freshments to keep taos on your bid. Others may come along and top your bid and iVwill be up to you to. up your bid if you are still interested. You do so by again, recording your increased bid and signing your name. At a,certain designated time (when ye ole cow bell sounds) the auction will be closed and the highest bidder on the slip of paper will pick up his/her "loot" and pay the cashier the final bid offered, !It should make for an interesting afternoon when we can all get'better acquainted, clear out some back closets and pick up a few fcaick-knacks we may have been looking for. Oh yes, the money received? It will go toward the purchase of new books for our library, •' I wish to express my sincere thanks to Mr, & Mrs. Dean Smith of Pepperell, MA for their kind and generous donation,of the new name tags for the Society. It was a most welcome gift coming at a most opportune time as we start a new year. A special thanks also goes out to our long time member, hard worker and ardent supporter Doris Sprague, She is the one responsible for that new sign on our meeting room door. Doris stepped out of office as co-librarian last January, but notice how she is still helping out at the library table or the reception desk, or in any other way that she can. With friends and support ers like those just mentioned, how can we help but excel? Do your "homework" thoroughly* List as many dates and places as po: sible and as much data as you have available about occupatlon(s) of your immigrant ancestor or person for whom you are searching. It i: unbelievable the number of persons with identical names one finds ii Sritish records. To be sure you find THE one for whom you are look ing you need as many reference points as you can accumulate. 2. Study the map showing the counties as they existed in the early day then locate the town or village within the county. Frequently coun •histories will reveal data you do not have. These county histories are more often available in the smaller libraries of a given area than in London libraries. 3* Good maps indicating percentage of records before 1813 that have be< recorded by the Genalogical Society of Latter Day Saints are avail able through the Society in Salt Lake City. A study of the maps an' records available will save much "backtracking". k0 Excellent maps showing every hamlet are available in the Atlas pub- ^ by the Automobile Club of Britain. -Ask for the address of the. club and price of Atlas from the British Tourist Authority. ' [ 5*' A list of the ships with their dates and names of your ancestors known to have arrived on them will speed research and avoid dupli cate copying, much of which has to be done by hand. 6. A 3x5 card headed by name of a county with listing of relevant data of your ancestor from that county helps to save time and confusion. 7. Some sources for data for counties and villages (as well as travel information): British Tourist Authority John Hancock Center, Suite 2540 875 North Michigan Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60611 or 612 South Flower Street, Los Angeles, California 90017 IN BRITAIN: A monthly magazine with delightfully informative articles is available at $11.00 per year: British Publications 11-03 46th Avenue Long Island City, New York 11101 SBCGS Ancestors West, Vol. Ill, #1, March 1977 A Few Hints for Research in Britain Helpful recent articles on Research in Britain: Connecticut Nutmegger June, 1975 Genealogical Helper January, 1977 Genealogical Societies in Britain with whom you nay wish to cor respond: Society of Genealogists Scotish Genealogy Society 37 Harrington Gardens 21 Howard Place London SW 7 -*ilX, England Edinburgh, Scotland EH3-51Y Birmingham and Midland Society of Genealogists Irish Genealogical Research U% Howard Road 82 Eaton Square lyings Heath London SW 1, England Birmingham, England B-l^-Po , Particularly helpful books: The Genealogists Encycl operlia L.
