SANTA BARBARA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY P. O. Box 1303 Goleta, CA 93116-1303 REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING DATE SecondSaturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. GoletaCcmnunity Center,5689 Hollister Ave. LIBRARY,Rocm8 above address, Wednesday 12 m-4 p.m. Extra Openings Saturdays,June 15,22,29,1985 44 FROM THE PRESIDENT A big thanks to alll We've reached our first goal of 50 new Society members. Our number now stands at 161 - the largest ever. There are still, however, genealogists in the Santa Barbara area who either have not heard about us or don't realize what we currently have to offer. Please spread the wordl Bring a friend to the next meeting. Let's boost our membership to 200 - that's only 39 more. We're very pleased to have new, returning, and continuing members participating in all activities of our Society. With everyone's enthusiasm and help, we can be a truly dynamic organization. Thanks for your encouragement, too. The Board really appreciates your support. For those new to family history, a Beginners/New Members Tutorial will be offered the last three Saturdays in June. Details are given elsewhere in this issue. Our Computer Interest Group is really "up and running" (couldn't resist a little computer lingo) with 28 members. Norm Scofield is chairing the sessions and has gotten us national attention! He has us listed in the May issue of "Genealogical Computing", the foremost publication in this field. So, if you have curiosity in this direction, "interest" in computers is the only requirement; "possession" is not necessaryl Doreen Dullea has been working hard on arrangements for more great programs. So, take advantage of them and bring a potenetial new member with you. The larger our base, the more interesting our group. Remember, the second Saturday (new meeting date) is of primary importance! Jan Cloud *************** EXTRA SOCIETY LIBRARY OPENINGS Saturday - June 15, 22, 29 12 noon to 4 p.m. Our Society library will be open on the above dates (following the Beginners Tutorial) and we need a few volunteer staffers. Detailed knowledge of the library is not essential. We just need to have a responsible person on hand. So, come do your own research and help us by being the staff person for a day. Please call Ruth Scollin to offer your assistence. Home: 965-2646; work: 963-1981. 45 BEGINNERS/NEW MEMBERS TUTORIAL JUNE 15, 22, 29 10:00 - 12:00 Boon We would like all members of the Society to enjoy their membership to the fullest and to take advantage of the programs, bus trips, workshops, etc. which we offer. For those who are new to genealogy, it takes a bit of understanding about researching, charting, and recording your family history in order to really get in on the fun. And it is FUN! Therefore, a class for new members or those who are beginners in genealogy will be held the last 3 Saturdays in June from 10 - 12 am at our Society's Library, Room 8 of the Goleta Community Center. Topics covered will include: family group sheets, pedigree charts, correspondence, vital records, census records, and - whatever else comes up that you need to know. The class will be limited to 12 people in order to allow for individual consultation and analysis of problems. We plan small working groups so that you can really get started on YOUR RESEARCH. Preference will be given to new members. However, if you are not new, but feel that you could benefit from this class, please feel free to call and put your name on a stand-by list. In the event there is space available or cancellations occur, we would be happy to include any members of the Society. This class is free to members of our Society or to those who join at the first meeting. Non-members will be accepted on a space-available basis for a fee. Because of the limit placed on participants, please be certain to attend if you reserve space in this class. You'll have fun, learn more about genealogy, and get to know some fellow-Society members better. Come join us on the last 3 Saturdays in June!
