TherecordsuggeststhatWilliamHenryTannerhadfinancial troublesandHenryLouis’earlychildhoodmayhavebeenmarredbylivinginseveraldifferentplaces. Inmyearlyyears,Iwasalittleawedbyhim. HewasoneofthetallestpeopleIknew(about6'-3")withablackbeard. Untilneartheendofhisdays,hewasanimposingfigure. Workwashismotto. Heworkedhischildrenalso. Hisson,Alonzo'seducationwaslimitedtothreeorfourgradesbecauseschoolinterferedwithworkonthefarm. Theotherchildren receivedlesseducationthanmanyoftheirpeers. Perhapsthisobsessionwithwork–thisdesiretosucceedatfarming,theonlyoccupationheknew—wastocompensateforthe traumaticeventsofhisadolescence. Hisparents’marriagewasablendingoftwosubstantialneighborhoodfarmfamilies. Butitwent sour. Thereweretwochildren—Henryandasister,ElizabethFranceswhowasfiveyearsyounger. Henry’sfatherabandonedthe familyforanotherwomanwhenHenrywasabouttwelve. HismotherwassoembitteredthatshehadhisfatherindictedthreetimesinBooneCounty. Oneofthechargeswasforstealing sheep—thereafterhisfatherwasknownas“SheepBill”Tanner. Therewerefiveorfewerprisoners fromBooneCountyinstateinstitutionsadonlythreeorfourdivorcesayearswerebeinggrantedinBooneCounty. So,at19,onFebruary22,1877,hesetouttomakealifeofhisownbymarryinganeighborhoodgirl,CarrieNaomiVaughn. Shewas 18yearsold. ThemarriagewasperformedatAaronZimmerman’shouseby W.C.Barnett,M.G.,inthepresenceofJohnW.Hogan andEphraimL.Rouse(hisuncle). ItwasaThursday. Theyhadatotalof11childrenofwhich8ofthemmadeittoadulthood. AaronZimmermanwasthenearesttoagrandfatherthatCarrieeverknew.HergrandfatherVaughndiedbeforeshewasborn. Presumably,also,hergrandfatherReed.
