Notes for Jordan Munroe SOLES Soles, Jordan, Company D, 73rd Regiment Posted by Jason Bordeaux on Sat, 19 Sep 1998 (to the Columbus County, NC USGenWeb Site) Surnames: Watts, Soles Phillip Watts (b. ca. 1795) was the son of Berryman Watts and his wife Mary who settled in Columbus County (then Bladen) before 1763. Phillip married Dicey. I am seeking her maiden name. I would also like to see any deeds or documents that offer proof of the children of Phillip Watts. Currently I have listed Goldeberry and Anna Eliza, but I don't have proof for either. My ancestor, Anna Eliza Watts (b. ca. 1823), married Jordan "Jird" Soles (b. May 1816), supposedly a son of Joshua Soles. Phillips Watts is recorded as deeding land to Jordan Soles and family tradition has it thatAnna Eliza's maiden name was Watts. In the 1850 Horry County, census Jerdan Souls, is listed as head of household # 79, with his wife A. E., and 4 children, he his wife and 3 children are listed as born in North Carolina, he is living 2 doors away from Allagood Suggs, and his family. Are they related??? Better get a cup of coffee or something. First of all, I don't know how old you are, so you may not remember a TV show called, "You Were There." The show presented a moment in history as if it were current news, rather like we saw the Gulf War on TV. I remember seeing one of the segments when I was little that dealt with some Confederate soldiers who were captured by the Yankees and imprisoned beside a river. They escaped and tried to swim to safety but only two of the dozen or so soldiers made it. The rest drowned. The story fascinated me for some reason and I remembered it later on when a cousin of ours named Ressie Mae came to Florida from North Carolina for a visit and told a similar story about one of our own forebears. The story simmered in the back of my consciousness for years, until sometime in the 1980's I made a trip to Sandy Plain. I think I was related to virtually everyone in the area and I asked about the story. One of the cousins referred me to Arthur Norris, who was then in his 80s and legally blind. Even though I had never met this cousin and his wife, they invited me into their home and were eager to talk about our ancestors. I asked about the soldier who had escaped from the Yankee prison and Arthur warmed to the story. I will try to relate to you in his words as much as I remember them. He told me this: "Well, that would be my grandfather, Charles Calvin Soles. He and some other boys were captured by the Yankees and put in prison by a big river. I don't remember the name of the river, but it were wide and deep and had a fast current. It was a stinking hole and them boys decided to try to escape. They got out all right, but they had to swim the river. Grandpa were a good swimmer and one of them boys knowed that. He clumb up on grandpa's back and tried to hang on. Made grandpa mad and he hit him hard. That made the boy mad, too, and give him the strength to fight the river. Him and grandpa got across to safety on the other side. Them other boys drowned. A farmer driving by in a hay wagon stopped and picked them up. He hid them under his load of hay and smuggled them past enemy lines to Confederate territory. Grandpa come back here [to Sandy Plain] and run a tavern right down the road. One night a fellow come in and started chasin Grandpa around the tavern with a gun. Shot him. They took Grandpa home in a wagon. Thought he were dead. But he weren't. Come back to run the tavern again. Lived to be 47 years old." Lucky for me, too, or I wouldn't be here. Arthur and his wife were delightful people, warm and welcoming. I felt at home with them immediately. I'm sure they have passed away by now. Arthur told me that his grandmother lived many years longer than Charles Calvin and that Arthur remembered her well. Ironically, my daughter's company just sent her to Raleigh-Durham for a meeting at their headquarters. She will be in the area through this weekend and was going to try to get down to Sandy Plain to see whatever relatives she could find. We were both rather excited about it. We live in San Diego so we don't get that way often. I also have photographs of Charles Calvin, his wife, and several other ancestors from around the same time frame. I can scan them in and send them to you if you don't already have them. This research is fun but it can be so frustrating! By the way, where do the Norrises fit in with your family? Are we cousins umpty times removed or just leaves on the far sides of the tree? Notes for Joshua SOALS Posted by Jason Bordeaux <[email protected]> on Mon, 02 Aug 1999, in response to Isaiah Soles(Sowls), posted by james gore on Thu, 29 Jul 1999 Surname: Soles, Soule, Holway I have a deed that appears to be a 'sibling transaction' that lists about 10 people one of which is Isaiah Soles. The 10 listed are Soles family members. It appears that the land described once belonged to Joshua Soles and for this reason, most researchers assign Joshua as the father of the group. Although I have the deed, I have not done the researche to verify if this is true. A similar deed also exists for Joshua's siblings and it appears that they were the children of Joseph Soule who was the initial owner of the land. This Joseph Soule may be/probably is the Joseph Soule who is listed in the Mayflower book as having been born in 1731 to Benjamin Soule and Mary Holway. Joseph Soule settled in what is now the Columbus County area. However, the records are hard to trace and interpret since Joseph had brothers and 1st cousins who settled there with him and who also used many of the same names. Children of Joshua SOALS and Elizabeth CARTRETTE were as follows: i Luke3 SOLES . ii Mary3 SOLES . iii Daughter3 SOLES . iv Daughter3 SOALS . v Elizabeth3 SOLES , born abt 1808; died abt 1871. vi Isiah3 SOLES , born abt 1810 in NC. 1850 Census - Columbus County, NC 497/500, Isaiah Souls, 45, M, W, Farmer, 300, NC 497/500, Tabitha Souls, 42, F, W, NC 497/500, Joshua Souls, 18, M, W, NC 497/500, Alva Souls, 13, M, W, NC 497/500, Ireny Souls, 11, F, W, NC 497/500, Alice Souls, 9, F, W, NC 497/500,
