Edward C Holland was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He died Jul 1846 in Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. History of LaSalle County, Illinois ~ 1877 Sketch of Settlers Utica Edward HOLLAND came from Clermont County, Ohio, in 1840; his wife was Eva HESS. He died in 1846, leaving eleven children. His widow married Henry GORBET, who had fifteen children. Edward married (MRIN:84)Eva Catherine Hess, daughter of Benjamin Hess and Barbara Ann Simeon (MRIN:86). Eva was born 3 Jun 1808 in Northamption, Pennsylvania. She died 31 Dec 1900 and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. Another source lists birthdate as about 1817, and born in Clermont, Oh Family Search, lists Eva Hess, daughter of Benjamin and Barbara Hess, born June 3, 1807, in Northampton, Penn. This Louise Holland is sometimes listed as the daughter of Nathaniel and Eunice Holland, born in 1839. Therefore, Asa Crosier may bot be the husband of this Louisa Holland. She died 1870 in Pontiac, Livingston, Illinois. Another source list birthdate as 14 Mar 1839. Rebecca married (MRIN:102)Quincy Adams Gorbet on 23 Mar 1854 in Ottawa, LaSalle, Illinois. Quincy was born 4 Feb 1832. He died 4 Feb 1891. Quincy Adams Gorbet was born February 4, 1832 in Clermont County, OH. He was the eleventh child of HENRY D GORBET and SALLY ANN ROBINSON. QUINCY married REBECCA C HOLLAND, March 23, 1854 in Illinois. REBECCA was born March 24, 1839 in Clermont County, OH. Her parents were EDWARD HOLLAND and EVA HESS. After her father died, her mother married HENRY D. GORBET. QUINCY and REBECCA were step- sister and brother. Two of QUINCY's other brothers also married their HOLLAND stepsisters (brother DAVID married NACKEY HOLLAND and brother DANIEL married JEMIMA HOLLAND). Quincy enrolled in the Union Army, August 12 1861. He served with company C, 39th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. At the time he mustered in, the following was his physical description, 5'5" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. Pictures of QUINCY later showed that he must have been taller as he towered over his brothers. QUINCY was stationed in Virginia at a place called Harrison's Landing. He was unloading heavy crates of hard bread when they fell from the loading dock and he was ruptured. He received an honorable discharge, August 16 1862 and received total disability for his injuries. REBECCA died around 1870-1875. Its is not known where she is buried. After REBECCA's death, QUINCY married a widow, MARGARET MALINDA PHIPPS OSBORN. They married November 7, 1875 in Pontiac, Illlinois. MARGARET was previously married to ENOCH OSBORN. Her parents are unknown. QUINCY must have lived or visited California at one time, as he was close to his brother in Rackerby. QUINCY ADAMS GORBET was a kind and honorable man. He died February 4, 1891 in Denver, Colorado. MARGARET died in 1902. There is plenty more information in the book. Contact Barbara and James Gorbet's daughter, Chrisi Casey at 5056342065. Jackey Maggie Holland was born 29 Sep 1842 in Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. I have assumed Jackey Maggie was born in Utica, since there is record that Edward C and Eva came to Utica in 1840. also listed as Nackey on one census report. Jackey married (MRIN:104)James Gay in 1865. 13 M xii. Benjamin F Holland was born 1 Oct 1843 in Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. He died 1925 and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. Listed 1877 Biographical Directory for Utica township, as B.F. Holland, occupation Laborer. "Colfax Clipper Sat 9 Jan 1904 Mr. B. F. Holland of Spring Valley, Ills., is here this week for the first visit he has made with his brother , Dr. E. M. Holland, in 14 years. He is a railroad contractor and apparently prosperous. The brothers hardly recognized each other upon meeting, although the writer was able to notice a decided family resemblance. Mr. Holland will return home Monday." He died 2 Mar 19041 in Colfax, Jasper, Iowa1 and was buried 6 Mar 1904 in Oakhill Cemetery, Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. Edwin M. Holland was a medical doctor in Colfax Iowa, and was listed as an MD on the 1885 Iowa State census. He married his housekeeper, 20 years younger than he, Christina Marie DuPray (DuPres, Du Prey)in 1874. His first wife was Marilla Robbins, with whom he had four children. She died in 1868. It is rumored through family stories that Dr. Holland had only one leg, but this is not confirmed. He was born in Clermont, OH. His parents, and all but two of his brothers and sisters, moved to Utica, LaSalle County, Illinios in 1840. His father died in 1846. Edwin moved to Nebraska in 1871, then to Jefferson County, IA in 1874 and then to Jasper County, IA in 1877 Edwin M. Holland listed in 1900 census as living in Jasper county Iowa, occupation - physician. In a "1878 History of Jasper County - Colfax", Dr. E.M. Holland was listed as a Steward of the Methodist_Episopal Church, and listed as a Petitioner of the Riverside Masonic Lodge. He was also a member and officer of the Sons of Temperance and Good Templars. He was a member of the Union League during the war (Civil war). Christina was born 25 Sep 1852 in Prarie Spring, Jackson, Iowa. She died 1 May 1937 in Colfax, Jasper, Iowa and was buried 3 May 1937 in Oakhill Cemetery, Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. Christina is 20 years younger than her husband, Dr. Edwin M. Holland. According to family verbal history, Christina was employed by Dr. Holland as a housekeeper, before she married him. Her son Vinson, and his family lived with her for some years in Colfax, in her house on Front Street. Her grandson, Raymond Holland recalls "Grandma had a salve, that she probably made from herbs, and it was good for everything - cuts, scrapes, rashes, etc". Whatever the ailment, the cure was always "Grandma's salve". They had the following children: 16 M i. Raymond Leighton Holland was born 20 Oct 1875. He died 7 Jan 1886 in Colfax, Jasper County, Iowa and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Colfax Iowa. + 17 M ii. Vinson Andrew Holland was born 28 May 1884 and died 29 Dec 1945. Edwin also married (2-MRIN:123)Marilla Robbins in 1852 in LaSalle, Illinois. Marilla was born 1832 in Ohio. She died 1868. Came to La Salle County, ILL from Ellsworth, Hancock Co., Me, in 1855, and settled in Deer Park on a farm wehre he lived til 1862, when he moved to Utica. He was engaged in the manufacture of fire brick. Holland, one of the old, respected physicians of Colfax, died at his home in the spring city Wednesday evening. He was about eighty years of age and had been in failing health for some time. He was a most excellent man and will be mourned by many friends. The funeral is announced to occur Sunday at 11 o(cid:182)clock and will be conducted by the Masonic Fraternity, of which the doctor had long been a member.". 6 Third Generation 14. Bell M. He died 31 Dec 1945 in Utica, LaSalle, Illinois and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Utica, LaSalle, Illinois. Probably named after the original Lorenzo Dow (October 16, 1777- February 2, 1834) who was an eccentric minister whose infamy, influence and travels throughout the country led to many thousands of U.S. children of the early 19th century to be named after him. Vinson's occupation is listed as Proprietor of a Bowling Alley. In 1917, Vinson registered for the World War I draft. He listed his occupation as a linesman, for a Powder factory in Nitro, West Virginia. 1920 Census, still lived in Colfax. Listed occupation as Linesman for the Electric Company. 1930 Census - Vinson and family lived in Peoria Heights, IL. Occupation listed as Laborer/Odd jobs. Vinson married (MRIN:3)Nellie Florence VanNote, daughter of Conrow VanNote and Susan Arrena Shelly (MRIN:5), on 9 Aug 1907 in Des Moines, Iowa. Nellie was born 13 Feb 1888 in Farmer City, DeWitt, Illinois.
