UPDATED CHECKLIST Our currentlistincludes256species describedupto December2006.Although therateof descriptionof newspecies occurring inArgentina hasbeenlowduring thelastcentury, withoverhalfofitsodonatesalready describedatthebeginning ofthe 1900’s(Figs 1-2),thereare stillnewspecies being discovered, ofwhichwe currently knowof 14,bringing thetotalofknown species to271. A major development over the lastfew decades hasbeen anincrease in the knowledge ofthe larvalstage, which is crucial forthe development ofregional programs for conservationand managementof wetlands. Approximately two thirdsoftheknownlarvaehavebeendescribedduringthelast25 years, andabout halfofthemduring thelast8 years(Fig. 2).Atpresent, the lastlarvalinstar of approximately 53%oftheArgentine species isknown(Fig. 2). The best known areas correspond to BuenosAiresprovince, Patagonia (southern halfofthecountry Nto Mendoza andLaPampa), NE Argentina, including Misiones, CorrientesandEntre Rios provinces, andNW Argentina, encompassing Jujuy, Saltaand Tucumanprov- inces.Thereare stillseveralareas thathavebeenvery poorlysampled, including theprovinces ofFormosa, Chaco, LaPampa andSanJuan, andsomeothersthat were sampled only partially, such as Catamarca, LaRioja, San Luis, Cordoba, Santiago delEsteroandSantaFe provinces (Fig. 3). AlthoughArgentina isalargecountry(2,780,400 km2)thenumberofresident odonatespecies isrelativelylowcompared tootherneotropical countries(equal to thatof CostaRica, muchsmaller insize; RAMIREZet ah, 2000), because muchofitsterritoryis includedina regionthatiseithertemperateandcoldor relatively dry. Its richest areas are foundinthe northernsubtropical provinces (Fig. 3),whichhouseovertwothirdsofthetotalnumberofspecies, mostofthem widely distributedin theNeotropical regionandreaching theirsouthernlimitof distributioninArgentina.
