Furthermore, and even more importantly, the general analysis of the recent M.A. entrance exams in English literature has convincingly shown that numerous and various parts—from introductions and timetables to footnotes—of these two volumes have been objects of direct query, putting a stamp of affirmation on the special significance of this anthology for both students and professors of English literature in Iran. Given the limited availability and exorbitant price of these two volumes in Iran and also the at times complicated, lengthy, and hard-to-follow-and-categorize introductions of the events and authors, the present book has tried to do its best at summarizing, delineating, and outlining the most important and salient parts of each period and writer introduction. The concise and comprehensive outlines offered in this book provide a general framework and overview of all the seven major historical periods that have been central and definitive to laying the foundation for English literature and determining the course of its historical and literary progression. Moreover, this indispensable companion features more than eighty literary masterminds—all anthologized in The Norton Anthology of English Literature, from the Middle Ages to the present—hoping to equip its readers with sufficient knowledge and background to successfully cultivate and shape their future academic pursuits, namely Masters and Doctoral programs.
