The American Academy of Osteopathy® Trauma: An Integrative Osteopathic Approach Denise K. Burns, DO, FAAO, Program Chair Convocation 2014 The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, CO March 19–23 Participant Workbook Osteopathic Pledge of Commitment As members of the osteopathic medical profession, in an effort to instill loyalty and strengthen the profession, we recall the tenets on which this profession is founded – the dynamic interaction of mind, body and spirit; the body’s ability to heal itself; the primary role of the musculoskeletal system; and preventive medicine as the key to maintaining health. We recognize the work our predecessors have accomplished in building the profession, and we commit ourselves to continuing that work. I pledge to: • Provide compassionate, quality care to my patients; • Partner with them to promote health; • Display integrity and professionalism throughout my career; • Advance the philosophy, practice and science of osteopathic medicine; • Continue life-long learning; • Support my profession with loyalty in action, word and deed; and • Live each day as an example of what an osteopathic physician should be. (As part of his 2002-2003 “Year of the Member” campaign, the American Osteopathic Association’s Anthony A. Minissale, DO, appointed and charged the Task Force on the Osteopathic Code of Leadership with creating a pledge to help build loyalty within the osteopathic medical profession that begins during day one of osteopathic medical school and continues throughout the osteopathic physician’s career. Over 150 delegates convened in February 2003 for the annual AOA Leadership Conference and endorsed this Osteopathic Pledge of Commitment, as well as identified strategies for promoting the pledge throughout the profession. Subsequently, the AOA Board of Trustees adopted this pledge on February 28, and encouraged its affiliated organizations to assist in its implementation. Hence, the American Academy of Osteopathy’s leadership recommended communication of this initiative to all AAO members at the AAO Convocations and in AAO publications). American Academy of Osteopathy® Mission Statement & Goals The mission of the American Academy of Osteopathy® is to teach, advocate, and research the science, art and philosophy of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practices and manipulative treatment in patient care. 1. To maintain, advance and advocate the AAO as a resource of educational excellence on osteopathy. 2. To evaluate and advance policies which will assure the financial growth and viability of the AAO. 3. To develop programs and activities which foster growth and development of the membership. 4. To implement policies ensuring optimal structure and function of the AAO’s boards and committees. 5. To facilitate programs promoting collaborative efforts that further OPP/OMT research and training. 6. To serve the osteopathic medical profession as an advocate, resource and guide in policy making and standard setting.
