In 1964, informal discussions between a nurober of rnathernaticians and editors of Springer-Verlag led to the founding of the series. It was born out of the desire to irnprove the distribution of interesting though informal and highly specialized lectures, serninar notes and expository accounts of new developrnents. Forrnerly such papers were disserninated as rnirneographed notes to a srnall "in-group" and were otherwise hard to obtain. In starting this service to the rnathernatical cornrnunity, we could not foresee its rnarnrnoth growth and ultirnate popularity. In retrospect it becornes clear that the success of the series is to no srnall extent due to the early involvernent of excellent rnathernaticians both as authors and editors. Vle should also like to point out the exernplary cooperation between our production departrnent and a printing house which grew with the series and did indeed set standards for the handling of sornetirnes difficult to reproduce rnanuscripts, not to rnention the administrative problerns that occur if you publish five to six volurnes a rnonth with different rnailing schedules to authors, editors, conference participants and standing order custorners. Vle are a little proud that we have been able to rnaintain the inforrnality of the pioneering days and through it are still able to keep to sorne boundary conditions which had to be rnet to rnake the series worthwhile: 1. The price should be cornparatively low 2. The production time should be very short 3. The authors should be able to rnaintain their service to their peer group 4. They should not be bound by contractual restrictions concerning publication of their material in other form. Sorne adjustrnents which had to be rnade in editorial rnatters are described in the contribution by Albrecht Dold and Beno Eckmann who have devoted an irnrneasurable arnount of time and energy to the handling of the series. 2 We also wish to thank the advisors of our various subseriesl who brought contributions that originated in their departments into the series there by giving them a wider distribution and making the series more worth while. Some figures in perspective may be interesting and explain some of the difficulties in handling such an active series. Well over a million copies have been printed in nearly twelve years and more than 600.000 copies have been sold - many of these are individual sales through the book trade and less than 30% are sold by standing orders. This accounts for a considerable storage and handling problern which becomes more evi dent if one considers the availability of Lecture Notes through book stores all over the world. A rough distribution in sales per country is given in the following table: USA Japan F.R. of Germany India Great Britai~ (including sales to exporters) 30% 20% 1515% 6% 415% France Italy Spain Switzerland Rest 4% 217% 1 6% 1 5% "'20% 1 1 All efforts to publish high level research rely heavily on the critical cooperation of those who produce and consume this literature and we should like to invitel very explicitely all comments and suggestions 1 for publications. As publishers we try to steer a balanced course between economic conditions that make our enterprise possible and scientific needs that make our efforts worth their while. Editors' Remarks Springer-Verlag kindly invited us to write a contribution to the present index-issue which marks the appearance of the SOOth volume of the series. ''Je are happy to use this opportuni ty to thank Springer-Verlag and, of course, authors, referees and advisors for having made the series and its rapid growth possible. The very efficient and under standing cooperation of the publisher greatly facilitated the task of the editors, and we would like to comment here on our editorial work. The idea of the Lecture Notes series has been, since its beginning, to make advanced mathematics lectures available to a large public. These lectures may be either special courses, seminars, etc., or conference talks. Thus there are, roughly speaking, two types of Lecture Notes volumes: monographs and proceedings; in both cases they shoulä reflect as far as possible, the original character of the lectures, but, of course, the criteria must be different for these two types. As to Lecture Notes monographs, preference is given to those manuscripts which are genuine "lecture notes" in character. In particular, they should be reasonably self-contained and rounded off. Thus they may, and often will, not only present results of the author but also related work by other people. Furthermore, the manuscript should provide sufficient motivation, examples and applications. This clearly distinguishes Lecture Notes manuscripts from journal articles which are usually re quired to be very concise. Articles intended for a journal but too long to be accepted by most journals, usually do not have this "lecture notes" character. For similar reasons it is unusual for Ph.D. theses or manuscripts based on theses to be accepted for the Lecture Notes series. As for Lecture Notes proceedings, the criteria are incorporated on the information sheet (printed at the end of this volume) which is sent to people inquiring about the publication of a conference in the Lecture Notes. They sometimes create new problems: if some of the contributions to a proceedings volume are not compatible with the criteria, the or ganizers of the conference often plead for an exception whereas we argue for omission of these contributions - otherwise the criteria would be come unusable. Most critical in this respect are resume- or announce ment-type contributions. Their interest for the reader is usually short lived, and there are other adequate possibilities for quick publication of announcements. 4 Generally speaking, Lecture Notes "aim to report ... quickly, informally, at high level ... ", as it says on the back cover- we should add "at reasonable prices", and perhaps some other qualifications. Clearly this program entails problems. High level requires competent referees. The referee usually needs time to arrive at a founded conclusion, and this conflicts wi th "quickly". Informali ty may get in conflict wi th. the aim for high level. Such problems are more or less familiar and can be settled by reasonable compromises. The real difficulty is the ever in creasing nurober of acceptable manuscripts which we receive on the one hand and the limited nurober of volumes which can be published on the other hand. Springer-Verlag considers publication of 60 volumes ner year as the limit above which production, price policy, sales, standing orders, etc. become unmanageable. How should one select 60 out of al mest the double nurober of acceptable manuscripts? Clearly, further criteria have to be used which are not based on quality alone. As a first measure, short manuscripts of less than 100 pages are ex cluded since 1971. This was justified by the fact that thin volumes are too expensive per page; nowadays even 100 page volumes cost too much per page. In special cases two or more thin manuscripts can be combined into one volume - if the subjects are close enough and if the authors agree. One also tried to concentrate different conferences into one volume. Fattening the volumes does not solve the problems, of course. We are further trying to keep the Lecture Notes program reasonably balanced with respect to the various areas of mathematics. Acceptable manuscripts may be declined because the subject is very specialized, or because it is already well represented by Lecture Notes volumes which are recently published or are to be published shortly. One might say that the additional criteria for selecting manuscripts are oriented towards the interest of readers rather than of authors. However, the prime concern will always be quality which is in the interest of both, authors and readers. The Books 1 Warmer, J.: Seminar über Funktionen-Aigebren. Berkeley noles by McCiendon. 1966.
