The Illustrated Dictionary of Art and Archae-
ology contains definitions of thousands of terms
and more than 700 illustrations devoted to a
broad base of subject matter under the gen-
erally-inclusive heading of Art and Archaeol-
ogy. Included in this definitive work are terms
used in architecture and in such related sub-
jects as pottery, costume, furniture, armor,
heraldry, weaving, ornament, jewelry, music,
and ecclesiastical ritual. Needlework, ivories,
goldsmithery, and pigments are also exten-
sively treated, as are Greek, Roman, and
Christian antiquities. All of the compilations
that went into the entire work were drawn
from leading authorities in each of the special
subject branches.
