Essential aspects of the topic from cause and diagnosis to treatment and cure are described. Each chapter de- tails a specific topic area along the continuum of how medical personnel diagnose disorders of hearing/balance to how surgical implantation and rehabilitation can remedy various conditions. The pathway through this process begins with the case history in chapter 1, followed by detailed descriptions of current knowledge re- garding fundamental causes of hearing loss and balance disorder, and then provid- ing thorough description of objective assessment. Chapters 8–11 offer specialized treatment and rehabilitative options for the various disorders, and the remaining chapters cover special topics and conclude with pertinent case studies. The reader will learn the most sophisticated methods of diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders from experts in various subspecialties of this broad topic. As the title implies, this resource will be an ‘essential guide’to the topic and in a concise format. The information is critical to hearing/balance related disciplines including audiology, otolaryngology, general medicine and rehabilitation oriented allied health care professions. ix
