Five successive printings of that collection have demonstrated the continuing need for a selection of articles that comple ments the narrative histories of Alaska used in undergraduate courses and available to general readers. But an explosion of fresh scholarship has oc curred since the original collection. The Alaska Historical Society's jour nal, Alaska History, has printed numerous important articles by established and new historians, and Padfie Northwest {)Jjarterly has continued its strong commitment to scholarship of the region. In addition, new monographs have appeared, along with a number of significant essays in other collec tions and journals, and several useful doctoral dissertations. Symposia on the history of Russian America have also stimulated work in that field. Fre quent users of the first collection have made known their wishes for a re vision that would gather together some of this new work. We are grateful for their comments and confidence; this new selection is a response to their requests. Like the original, this collection is intended to provide a deeper, more focused interpretation of significant events and developments in Alaska history than the general histories or the casual literature. In addition to the work on political, social, and economic history, the editors have added material on environmental history and have expanded the sec tion on Russian America. Ten of the pieces from the original have been retained for this edition, to which have been added fifteen new selec tions. We hope that together they will be as useful as the original. ix
