Art Director: Jesse Cao Go find any graph concerning “prepper” industry growth—they’ve all been trending sharply since the ’90s. But this is no monolithic, paramilitary horde. The CONTRIBUTORS cumulative effect of various national threats has not only increased our ranks, but Sean Cooper, Michele Doele, Abe Elias, Amber Erickson Gabbey, Erin Hatfield, Garrett Kim, Andrew M. Luther, we have diversified as well. The real stereotypes are my Southern California friends Tim MacWelch, Bethany Miller, Michael Neiswender, and neighbors who think that stockpiling food and water makes them survivalists. But this year, you may have to be on guard a bit longer than usual. Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center are predicting a more active than usual hurricane season this year. Although the sea- son officially ends November 30, many people tend to let their guards down around Hal- loween, when the storms typically begin to weaken. This year, however, that’s not an option. “This year, oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the Atlantic basin are expected to pro- duce more and stronger hurricanes,” said Gerry Bell, PhD, lead seasonal hurricane fore- caster with the NOAA, in a May 23 news release. The factors involved in this year’s amped-up season include a continuation of the atmos- K pheric climate pattern, warmer than average water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and C O Caribbean Sea, and fewer El Niños (which normally suppress hurricane formation). ST K Therefore, remember to stay on guard this year all the way through the end of November HIN T to ensure that you don’t fall victim to a hurricane’s wrath. Y: B O T O H P K Make Eye Contact If Source: Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department: fwp.mt.gov/recreation/safety/wildlife/lion/lionEncounter.html C O T KS Face-to-Face with a N HI T Y: Mountain Lion B O T O PH AN ARIZONA MAN learned the hard way that it’s more important to face the sun than to face a moun- tain lion’s wrath. A hiker encountered a sleeping mountain lion in June and accidentally startled it, causing it to aggressively approach the man. The man began to yell and bang his hiking sticks together to scare off the creature, but the lion continued its approach— until the man realized he still had his sunglasses on, the Arizona Daily Starreported. Once the man removed his shades and was able to establish eye contact with the mountain lion, it left the trail and the man was free to safely continue his hike. If you’re ever faced with a mountain lion, con- sider these tips from the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department: • Avoid the mountain lion if at all possible— never approach it. • Do not run or turn your back. Make eye contact and pick up any children nearby while main- taining that eye contact with the mountain lion. • Try and appear larger than you are by raising your arms, opening your jacket, and waving your arms. • Speak firmly. In most cases, practicing these maneuvers will prompt the mountain lion to run. In most cases, they would rather avoid a confrontation. 8 ASG_1308_NEWS 7/22/13 11:55 PM Page 9 Tornado Tips Can Keep You Alive THE DEVASTATING TORNADOESthat ripped through Oklahoma in May and June were not only terrifying for local residents of the area, but they also turned out to be deadly for one famous tornado chaser. Tim Samaras, who was a longtime tornado researcher, died in the storm along with his son, who was filming the tornadoes. To avoid suffering the same devastating fate as the Samaras, be sure to follow the safety tips outlined by the NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, which include the following: • Avoid windows if a tornado is approaching. Go to the basement (or lowest floor) or under a heavy item like a desk. • If you’re in a mobile home, leave if you have time, and head to a sturdy building or shelter. • If you’re in a car, see if a shelter is nearby, and if so, run to it. If there’s no time to outrun the tornado, put on your seat belt, stop the car, and put your head below the windows. If you have a coat or blanket, cover your head and get as low as you can. Don’t seek shelter under a bridge. CK • If you’re outside with no buildings nearby where you can seek shel- O ST ter, lie face-down and flat on the lowest ground, protecting your K HIN head with your arms. Stay away from trees and cars. T Y: B O T O PH Source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/safety.html How Long Can You Last? WITHOUT WATER: Up to a week in certain circumstances! WITHOUT FOOD: The duration of survival without food is greatly influenced by factors such as body weight, genetic variation, other health considerations and, most importantly, the presence or absence of dehydration. People have gone as long as 70 days while some have died in less than a month.
