the breach, dear friends, once more:” It would seem that our community is scarcely in need of Shakespeare’s exhortations to convene every year for our November meeting. We have received well over 2,100 abstracts, even exceeding the last year’s seemingly impossibly large number for Long Beach. Since we started our planning for this meeting in 2006, we have been forced to move to a larger venue, to contract several times for additional meeting rooms at the Convention Center and to give up on plans to hold our reception in the stunning Baltimore National Aquarium the capacity of which is “only” 1,500 people. On Monday we will run a record 28 parallel sessions and all of us will be faced by the agonizing choice of which talk to attend of the many that we are interested in. The format of this meeting is similar to that of the recent ones. We look forward to the 2011 Fluid Dynamics Prize lecture by Professor Tony Maxworthy, to the eight invited lectures and to the Acrivos and Frenkiel Awards lectures. In addition, the newly established Stanley Corrsin Prize will be awarded for the first time, to Professor Charles Meneveau, who will also deliver a lecture. It is a fitting coincidence that this prize be first awarded in Baltimore, as Stanley Corrsin was a professor at the Johns Hopkins University during his entire distinguished career, from 1947 until his untimely death in 1986. Another DFD first this year are several Focus Sessions: Evaporative Self-Assembly, PIV Uncertainty and Wind Energy. These sessions, quite common at other APS meetings, are a blend of solicited and contrib- uted talks typically focusing on topics of current or upcoming interest. As in previous meetings, we also have three Minisymposia, on Electrokinetic Flows, Cardiac Fluid Mechanics, and Geological CO Sequestration, 2 a number of useful exhibits, and the Gallery of Fluid Motion. We are grateful to the several area schools who have contributed to this meeting and to the many col- leagues who have helped with major aspects of this complex enterprise. Peggy Holland and Monica Malouf of Meetings & More have given us their invaluable help and advice and kept us on the narrow path. On behalf of my colleagues on the Organizing Committee I wish all of you an excellent meeting. We hope that you will also have a chance to visit some of the local attractions, most of which are within easy walking distance of the Baltimore Convention Center. In conclusion, “imitate the action of the tiger:/Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,/Disguise fair nature with hard-favored rage” — figuratively speaking, naturally.
