On a personal level and as an aspiring political scientist, I was consumed with thoughts about what that day would mean. It turns out that I spent more time thinking about it than anticipated, way beyond my mother’s safe return to Montréal. I began to study allied responses to 9/11 in graduate school, during my postdoctoral fellowship, and continue to do so today, as a political studies professor at Queen’s University in Canada. Completing this book is my big- gest professional accomplishment to date. It is the culmination of an incred- ible journey that allowed me the luxury of reading, teaching, and writing for a living. I off er sincere thanks to my colleagues and friends who helped me with the manuscript: T. V. Paul, Michel Fortmann, Jessica Trisko, Frédéric Mérand, Walter Ladwig III, Marie-Joëlle Zahar, Jim Doig, Lucia Antalova Seybert, Jennifer Erickson, Richard Ned Lebow, William C. Wohlforth, Chris Wohlforth, Stephen G. Brooks, James T. McHugh, Pierre Martin, Norrin Ripsman, Steve Saideman, Marina Henke, Evan Resnick, Jason Davidson, Christophe Chowanietz, Djallil Lounnas, Ginger DiGaetano, Andreas Wenger, Alex Wilner, Jennifer Giroux, as well as the anonymous reviewers whose feedback proved crucial. I have been fortunate to work with excep- tional graduate students, namely Gaëlle Rivard Piché, Raphaël Zaff ran, Aaron Ettinger, Véronique Dumais, Simon Hogue, and Audrey Reeves. I am also grateful to all those whom I have interviewed in Ottawa, Canberra, and London in 2008 and 2009. Finally, I must acknowledge the precious support from the Fonds de recherche du Québec, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Department of National Defence’s Security and Defence Forum, the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College, the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Women in International Security, the Center for Peace and Security Studies at Georgetown University, the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zürich, and the McGill–Université de Montréal Centre for International Peace and Security. Over the years, I have leaned on close friends and fam- ily. I can always rely on Katherine Porowski, Justine Laurier, and Véronique Malo. I have great admiration for my mother, Kristina von Hlatky, and my late grandmother, Dr Esther Leser, for their strength of character. I thank my VonHlatky_Book.indd vii 7/27/2013 7:31:25 AM viii Acknowledgments father, John Udvarhelyi, for serious advice that is always delivered humor- ously. I would like to express gratitude to Paul Jutras for looking aft er me, and Lise Éthier for lively discussions and great food on de l’Esplanade. I dedicate this book to my husband, Philippe Lacoursière, who is perfect in my eyes, and our sons Ian and Zac, who are just like their father. Description:
Why are allies so unpredictable? In American Allies in Times of War, Stéfanie von Hlatky tackles this question by examining military cooperation between the United States and its allies. First, this book demonstrates that alliance demands in times of war cannot always be met by democratic allies du
