Thompson, Assistant Principal FFaaccuullttyy AAddvviissoorr Martine Devlin PPuubblliisshhiinngg Kathy Russell Florida By Grant Howard Florida, it‟s one of the greatest states I‟ve ever been to. It‟s beautiful with many different places you can go to and things you can see. I‟ll start off with Florida‟s uneven, grainy beaches. The fresh, salty smell of the splashing waves makes me want to jump in. The towering waves smack the water as they come thundering down. The wind picks up and I smell fresh, salted seaweed swimming in the air. I leave the beach, grab a bus and head to the wild Everglades. Snakes slither through the tall, green grass under my feet. Alligators glide along the swamp like logs, waiting hungrily to devour their prey. My shoes splash as I walk. I need to find my way out before I am eaten alive. Hurray, I am out of the Everglades! My wet clothes grab onto my legs. I dry off in the basking sun. I get in a new bus and head off to the number one tourist attraction in Florida; Disney World. It‟s an immense theme park filled with characters that frighten little children. I see a towering water slide called Splash Mountain. People ride in bumpy logs through murky water and out of nowhere you plummet down a gigantic waterfall. Huge waves crash down on me. I am drenched! I head back to the small hotel. Tiredly I think about the fantastic day I had. It was great with the grainy beaches, wild Everglades and gigantic amusement parks. The day in Florida was a success! Cocoa Beach By Hana Warner Cocoa Beach is the most fabulous place on earth. This spectacular place is located of the eastern coast of Florida. Whenever we visit my grandma, we‟re just a short walk away from this magnificent beach. At Cocoa Beach, the sand is as hot as the sun, but as soon as I dip my feet into the cool, refreshing water, a smile the size of the solar system lights up my face. The waves glisten as they come towards me. Crash! As I splash into the surf, I taste the salty spray. The smells of the sea fills my body as I mess around in the ocean for hours on end. Whenever I finally get sick of the sea, I spend my time doing one of the many things to do ashore. Something I love doing is searching for shells. Many shells litter Cocoa Beach, so I always have a wide variety to choose from. Some are rigid and some are smooth. I can search all day whenever we go, because it‟s always warm and we normally have lots of time. With the sun high in the sky I can waste the day away doing fun things. That‟s why I love Cocoa Beach more than dolphins love playing in the surf. 3 The Beach By Abbie Gamester I step onto the warm golden sand. My foot sinks down and grainy sand rolls over my foot. I take a step and glance up. I see the sun reflecting down on the ocean. The great big sea extends far down the beach as it was everlasting. It sparkles and glistens as the sun peers over it. As I continue my way over to the shore something sharp digs in between my toes. Startled a bit, I jump back and crouch down to see what it is. I search through the sand and find a sharp, but beautiful, peach, spiraling shell in the sand. I grasp it in my hand and carry on with my journey. I step on to some dampened sand and worm my toes into the mush. I feel my feet get covered with water and bits of shells clings on to tips of my toes, and then it all rushes back down. As I walk back over to my towel sitting on top of the sand, my wet feet are hidden with sand that stuck onto my foot. I sit down, close my eyes, and lay back as I feel the sun‟s warmth toast my body. Vacation in Mexico By Meredith Dougherty One vacation that I will always remember was the trip I took two years ago to Mexico. I went with my mom to Cancun to celebrate her 50th birthday. The trip was going to be a week of sun and fun for just the girls! One thing I loved was the beach which was covered with shells. The shells presented an array of unique shapes, textures, and colors all along the shore. We spent part of each day collecting different shells during our stay. The sand on the beach was light tan colored and very soft, but hot on your feet. The clear blue ocean water was refreshing from the burning sun. The highlight for me was swimming with the adorable dolphins. They felt like wet, smooth rubber against my skin. The dolphins were amazingly smart. Guided by their trainers‟ high pitched whistles, the dolphins did a bunch of interesting tricks. I really enjoyed my first trip to Cancun. I would love to go back again and enjoy the soft sandy beaches, the clear turquoise ocean and hanging out with my mom. 4 Blue Bernice Varela Ideas Stephanie Barry Blue is the color of the sky Ideas are like a lot of things, Blue is the color of But one is like a seed, blue jay the bird It starts small but then grows large, Blue is the color of the Even though there may be weeds. big ocean Blue is the color of At times it takes a while to sprout, Dicksey from the Telletubby Or it won‟t pop up at all. When the curtain gets pulled off, You know you never should have whined 5 Hawaii By Zachary Engle Hawaii is the most beautiful place on earth. It is difficult to describe how incredible the views are. In the distance there are colossal mountains in the center of the island. The mountains are great shadows lying against the landscape. The volcanoes have a threatening feel to them. At any time they could ooze hot lava all over the island. Hawaii may be small, but there are endless things people can do there. The thumping drums during the luaus make your heart beat faster and make you want to start dancing. The hula dancers move gracefully. I refuse to hula knowing that I‟d be making a fool of myself in front of an enormous crowd. Sunsets there are dazzling. The starry nights are an amazing sight. The sky over the island is clear so everybody can see the bright moon shining down on them. The fish in Hawaii are immense. Shimmering fish swim through the water as you snorkel. They vary in size and are interesting to look at. The poisonous fish are scary but as long as you don‟t mess with them they won‟t mess with you. There is natural beauty everywhere in Hawaii. The swaying palm trees tower over all other trees. These enormous trees have coconuts at the top of their trunks. The gentle flowers are tiny and colorful objects that are amazing to behold. These beauties are in every corner of the island. The shadows of distant islands glisten in the sunlight. They look like specs of dust when you see them. The food is delicious. Its mouth- watering aroma makes you want to devour it. If you like rainy weather, you shouldn‟t come to Hawaii. Flashing lighting usually won‟t be seen there. The sun is always shining there. There is always a fresh smell in the air no matter where you are on the island. The sand on the beaches feels smooth under your feet. The water feels refreshing against your skin. Whale watching is an awesome chance to be close to whales. Seeing them swim through the salty water is a beautiful sight. Whales‟ skins are smooth and barnacle-infested. The ocean looks like it will never end. The sight of it will make you want to fly across the sea. The waves in the gigantic ocean can be stout and massive. Surfers ride these waves with amazing skill. The people who live in Hawaii are friendly to everyone. They all have huge grins on their faces, but they seem kind rather than disturbing. The natives are always ready to help people. They generously welcome anybody who comes to their island. The geography of this land differs from where you are on the island. In some parts the land is low and flat and in other places it is high and mountainous. The land in Hawaii can also be very grassy. Laying on a chair and reading a good book as the burning sun shines down on you is very relaxing. Taking nice walks on the soft beach, if you had a hard day or are feeling stressed, can make you feel better. At the end of every day when you go to bed, you will always be looking forward to another day in this magical place. If you want to visit paradise, I suggest going to Hawaii. This is a place I‟m sure you‟ll never want to leave. 6 Nerd Ku Anthony Chiado I am still asleep Hummus is my lunch I wake up in the morning I like hummus for lunches Then eat some breakfast Sugar free is best Eating cereal is best My protractor‟s cool Especially Frosted Flakes It measures every angle Sometimes I snort milk Math is super-rad I wear overalls I get detention Then put on a shirt with straps I got too many answers And I wear knee socks I am too smarty Bus stops are horrid I get off the bus On the bus I get wedgied I get home and see Weenie I always yell stop He‟s my wiener dog A bully comes up I look for a snack He steals all my Pokemon I prefer celery No not my Charzard Peanut Butter too I go to P.E. The famous skyscrapers tower over me just as a thick, lukewarm breeze passes through my hair and cools me for the slightest moment. I look to my left and I see an extremely packed street. With so many vehicles rushing in every single direction, I sometimes wonder where and why they are going. All of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I see a dull flash. I shift my head to the right of me to see what it is and I see my brother, about to take a picture. Aiming his camera at the sign of Ellis Island, he presses another button. Yet another flash, dulled by the sunlight, appears and just as soon as it was here, it fades away. A massive smile sneaks across my face when I realize what fun we could have with a camera. I rush over to greet my brother. Together we walk past the sign, looking for places to enjoy as we take pictures of them. In my mind, an overwhelming feeling of happiness surrounds me when I realize that we're staying until Sunday. Maine By Callie Olenik The cool Maine air whistles in the wind on a bright and sunny day in late June. As I stroll down to the ocean, I feel on my feet what I assume are little pebbles washed up from the sparkling ocean. I smell the fresh sea air as I search for the perfect wave to ride in on my boogie board. I gaze up when I hear a noise only to see a flock of lurking around for food. As I am waiting I see the most enormous wave I have ever seen. I turn and face the nose of the board towards the beach as I get ready to take off by kicking my legs. As soon as it comes, it lifts me up above it. I find myself getting up off my hands and knees at the shoreline, and running out to search for the next biggest wave. 9 What is Poetry?
