Leica, Nikon, Olympus opt out of Photokina
Next year’s Photokina photography show in Cologne won’t feature
these three big names, the organisers have confirmed. While this
is a blow, they have confirmed the attendance of Canon, Sony,
Panasonic, Sigma, Tamron, Zeiss, Hasselblad and other key players.
Nikon and Olympus will, however, be at The Photography Show at
the NEC, Birmingham, from 14-17 March 2020.
Indian legend wins big
Raghu Rai, one of India’s best-known photographers, has won the
rather awkwardly named Académie des beaux-arts Photography
Award - William Klein. Rai, who is best known for his coverage
of the 1984 Bhopal disaster and has been a member of Magnum
Photos since 1977, receives a generous prize purse of €120,000
for his ‘lifelong commitment’ to photography.

Li Yuan-chia: Unique
Photographs

DURING his lifetime, the Chinese conceptual artist Li
Yuan-chia travelled from China, to Taiwan, Bologna
and London before setting up home in 1972 in Banks
at the far north of Cumbria on Hadrian’s Wall.
It’s here that he set up the LYC Museum and Art
Gallery, a place dedicated to showing innovative art
‘New York City. 1984. Feast of San Gennero, Little Italy’ alongside workshops and his own experimental work.
In his life, Yuan-chia experimented with sculpture,
painting and poetry, but in this exhibition, housed in
the wonderful Whitworth gallery in Manchester, the
focus is on his photography. Here are a group of
hand-coloured photographs of himself, his sculpture
and garden at Banks. How Li created this effect is not
certain, but it’s thought that he used inks designed for
retouching analogue colour photographs.
Often strange, but always melancholically beautiful
and surreal, the images are shown alongside the
artist’s collection of fi lm cameras.
