Alvaniaabstersa isproposed as a nomen novum.

In 1993VanderLindendescribedanewspecies ofAlvaniafromthe Azores underthe
nameAlvaniaobsoleta. Unfortunately this nameis preoccupied by Alvania obsoleta (S.V.
Wood, 1848),a well-knownfossil species fromthe Pliocene sandsin the Antwerp area.
Belgium. Although describedby Wood(1848: 105, pi. 11 figs. 1la-b) as Rissoaobsoleta
and consistently referredtobythisnameby more recentauthors, therecanbenodoubt
thatthis species belongs to the genus AlvaniaRisso, 1826.This canbe concludednot
only by examinationofthe shells themselves, butalso ofthe figures ofthe species inthe
literature, e.g. Harmer (1925: 859,pi. 65 fig. 6), VanRegteren Altenaetal. (1954: 63,
pi. 4 fig. 40) and especially Glibert (1957: 24, pi. 1 fig. 23).
Thereforethespecies describedby Van derLindenisin needofanewnameforwhich
we proposeAlvaniaabstersa, which meansthe 'abraded'Alvania, theabrasionresulting in
an obsolete sculpture.
